Singles Greatest, but... (Pete Sampras)
Member Name: jeffsumm
Advantages: Nearly Unstoppable in Singles Disadvantages: Can he even PLAY doubles?
Big Pete is certainly the master of singles and certainly owns centre court here. But after watching the parade of champions, I was struck by the fact that many previous men's players have many more Open titles than Sampras. The fact is that many, even as recent as McEnroe when he was ranked #1, played doubles as well as singles. McEnroe has a whole shelf full of Wimbledon doubles titles, for instance. You can't say that playing doubles doesn't harm your singles chances-- if you go to five sets day after day or twice in the same day, you'll have nothing left at the end. Besides that, many of the best players used to (or still do) play Davis Cup for their countries. Sampras has been criticized for years for skipping Davis cup. Pete might be the best ever, but he'll have to do more than just play singles to convince everyone. Summary: |
