Advantages: more money
Disadvantages: takes a bit of planning sometimes
We all know that being a student means that money can often be a problem, here are the things that I do to try and save myself a fer extra pounds here and there.
1: Invite people round for drinks before going out on a night on the town. It seems simple but many people forget that getting ready together not only helps you get in the mood but also helps cut the cost.
2: Invest in weekly or monthly bus tickets. Where I live they save you an absolute fortune and means you can get an unlimited number of buses, only having to pay a small extra fee for night buses.
3: Buy basic things in bulk. For example in Asda you can buy 1kg of dried pasta for £1. This works out much cheaper than buying small bags and because it has a long shelf life you can keep it for ages. You can also buy things like toiletries, kitchen utilities and dried foods in bulk at discount stores, usually with the same brand that is stocked in mainstream supermarkets.
4: Use the internet to your advantage! Doing a simple search engine search will reveal many discount codes and vouchers which can be used online when ordering food (dominoes especially is good for these) or offline once they have been printed.
5: Always sign up for all of the student cards around. And remember to use them! Often even when signs aren't put up in stores and cafes, they do accept NUS and uni cards, so remember to ask as well. These cards often save you as much as 20% off purchases.
6: Always carry a drink and a snack with you. Again sounds very simple but buying a chocolate bar and a bottle of water everyday soon adds up to £10 a week.
7: Use websites such as gumtree and freecycle when looking for new items which don't need to be brand new, such as furniture and household items. Often people are selling or giving away perfectly good items that they no longer need or want.
8: Learn to sew! Being able to mend that hole in your favourite pair of jeans not only means you wont be left looking daft when it splits even more, but also means that you get to save yourself both the frustration of jean shopping and a load of cash! This goes for everything from socks to tops!
9: If you drive don't be afraid to ask for petrol money when giving lifts. Many people wont offer, but if you ask they will more than often contribute. This is even more important with the current petrol prices. An easy way to do this is establish it before giving lifts, a simple "is it okay if everyone chips in with petrol money?" is usually sufficient and means that no one has the "oh I haven't got any cash on me" excuse.
10: Take advantage of every single offer going!
Summary: look after the pennies and the pounds look after themselves
