Advantages: Some games are extremly entertaining.
Disadvantages: Lack of money and quality players means poor games are common.
The SPL is the top league in Scottish Football today and consits of 12 teams who each play 38 games, each team 3 times, and then a top and bottom spilt is made and the teams from each side play each other once.
The league consits of Rangers, Celtic, Aberdeen, Dundee United, Hearts, Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Kilmarnock, Motherwell, St Mirren, Hibernian, Falkirk and Hamilton. The current champions are Celtic, however Rangers have won Scotlands top league 51 times and this is a world record for league titles.
The standard of the SPL, has become very low over the last few years, with brilliant players quickly been sold on to make profits and help balance the books at clubs such as Hutton from Rangers last year. This is a sad time for Scottish football and it requires a real shock to the arm to help it rise in stature again.
Some SPL games are shown on setanta sports tv, which has slightly reduced amounts of fans going to watch games live, however all teams gain from TV rights money.
The SPL winners go directly into the Champions League with the runners up going into the third qualifying round, and with Rangers and Celtic constantly fighting for these two places, both teams require to get into this league, to gain the extra £10 million revenue this can produce.
Overall the standard and money available in the SPL is on an alltime low, and seems to only be going backwards right now.
Summary: A lack of finances, crowds and quality players means a sub standard league.
