Advantages: Great talent
Disadvantages: Hes gone
That is how I describe one of my motor racing Heros, Ayrton Senna De Silva. Hailing from Brazil, he was an instant success on the Karting track at a tender age of 7 and was soon transported into the heady heights of British motorsport in the early 80's. Has arch enemy and nemesis during this time was our own Martin Brundle. Contesting the Formula 3 title, it went down to the wire with Martin coming a close second to the talented Brazilian. A test drive with Toleman and then a signed up drive followed in 1984 as he battled around the circuits of the world in a highly uncompetitive car. His talent however did not go unnoticed as the famous Lotus team, now in their rapid decendency, snapped him up to replace their new star, Nigel Mansell. Lotus were astonished as Senna again and again brought them victories in a terrible car against all the odds. After 2 seasons of driving the Yellow Camel Car, he was off to MaClaren where he was able to blossom and shine. Hence some of the most successful times lay ahead for both Senna and MaClaren. Pushing team mate Alain Prost Close for the title before snatching it from his the following year only to lose out again the year before Prost went to the Prancing Horse of Italy, Ferarri. It was while Driving for Ferarri that some of the best and Worst driving incidents happened between the pair. The finale in Suzuka in 1989 saw Senna Force Prost off on the first corner in an attempt to end Prosts challenge for the title. This dangerous manouvre almost earned a ban and caused a lot of damage. Senna's temper was always fiery which was proved again in Japan. During an end of season race in 1993, Eddie Ervine performed a dangerous pass on Senna who then decided to punch the Irishman when he got out of the car. Irvine earned a ban for his bravery. While he was firery, his shill and judgement was never in question. His ability to pull an amazing qualifyi
ng lap out of the bag was second to none. His passing was ruthless and calculated. He would have provided us with some great entertainment as he went head to hear with Schumacher. It is all too tragic that such a bright light of motorsport should be taken from us but this is sadly what happened. During a battle for the lead against Schumacher and driving for his new team Williams, Senna's Car malfunctioned and forced him into the wall at 180mph. A star was dead and I had lost a hero.
