Advantages: Provides more power
Disadvantages: Does take time to learn but then every style does!
Shito-ryu is a traditional style of Karate-do (way of the empty hand). It is one of the five original stlyes that were founded in the islands of Japan, Okinowa in particular. It descends from a martial art called Te, which in itself is a stlye brought over to Japan from China by gung fu practishoners. These gung fu styles were spread over the islands and the five styles grew from them. Shito ryu is a karate stlye with short powerful stances, in which the speed of the technique and the hip rotation proved all the power. It has the shortest stance of all karate styles and allows the user to apply more of a hip rotation into a kick or punch allowing more power to be used. Shito ryu is not as wide spread as the other main styles as there were strick rules about its teaching in force until fairly recently (1960s). The Shukokia style of karate is Shito ryu under a different name and is the style i studied for four years. The core of the English EKGB all style team comes from Shukokia clubs, in particular those in the S.K.U. which includes my club Koshido-ryu. The martial art of karate as with any martial art must suit the person learning it otherwise the techniques learnt may not be useful to that person. The style however is very general and powerful, and allows a good amount of discipline, self control and belief in yourself to be created. I would and have recomend this style over some of the other later forms simply for the fact that i know the club in this area and most of the people teaching, and they are of the highest standard including national competition level fighters/kata performers.
