Advantages: Benefits to medically needy, tax advantage to government, drop in criminal activity associated with,
Disadvantages: Just another reason to get buzzed, may lessen ambition for some weak folk...
It is rather apparent that one argument for keeping marijuana criminalized is to prevent yet another mind-altering drug from becoming an easily accessible commodity on the open market. Yet that very premise is one that would support the prohibition on alcohol-liquor, beer and wine.
One is correct in stating that freedom requires responsibility, like the responsibility one takes when imbibing too much and entering an automobile, striking and killing my best friends sister in the prime of her life 25 yrs ago. As far as politicians, few would risk their political career to do the right thing which is to legalize it. It is a responsible person/politician who looks to serve the constituency by offering protections that would derive from its legalization. Aside from the tax reward, it virtually ends any criminal activity that is inherent in its distribution. And why deny the public what it wants. Hell, people want scary, gore ridden movies, violent movies; some suggesting they are bad for the psyche of a society, but no one is offering to ban this. Or pornography. All those puritanical self-denying zealots who want to ban sex can not see that this is the very nature of humanity, to engage in what some people refer to as "God's greatest gift to humanity, the orgasm." Hell, everything on earth is bad for your health, too much water, too much food, and too much exercise-all the things that are deemed to benefit us can in and of themselves kill us. We all die, all of us. Why impose so many restrictions and cause undue strife and hardship for people whom can easily benefit from legalized marijuana-those with medical issues lie glaucoma, cancer, nausea inducing diseases, MS, the list goes on. I guess it is the old wedge argument rearing its ugly head-if you give an inch, they will want a yard. Soon, they will be talking about cocaine and heroin legalization. BS. Let us not be hypocrites on this issue. Jesus Christ, we have F*#king guns for anyone to buy in a minute or a few days and you are worried about pot?
CHORUS)
Legalize it
Don't criticize it
Legalize it Yea-ah Yea-ah
And I will advertise it.
Some call it tamjee
Some call it the weed
Some call it marijuana
Some of them call it ganja
Never mind, got to...
(CHORUS)
Singers smoke it
and players of instrument, too
Legalize it Yea-ah Yea-ah
That's the best thing you can do.
Doctors smoke it
Nurses smoke it
Judges smoke it
Even lawyer, too
So you've got to...
Peter Tosh
Summary: Keeping pot illegal is hypocracy at its finest.

SarkeBeeley - 09/11/06 I've heard this argument over and over again. I've partaken is certain things in the past but I'm still totally against legalisation of this. I've seen plenty of people who you would call 'weak' have major addiction issues with it (and yes it is psychologically addictive) and at the very least their relationships ruined. People like to say that it makes you relax and calm etc and yes it does but I know people who after using it for a while have actually become generally aggressive when they are high and when they aren't. These aren't just people who were already aggressive either. I'm actually a Youth Worker, I work with teenagers and very, very few take illegal drugs because they are illegal - they do it for the same reasons as adults - it feels good, escapism, improved confidence etc. These are the exact reasons why many drugs, including cannibis, are psychologically addictive - why deal with your problems or feel crap when you can get stoned? The paranoia that often stays with people even when they are sober is also extremely worrying. It seems that only people who use it regularly can't see how harmful it is... |
