Advantages: tax, controlled use & distribution, decriminlisation
Disadvantages: As far as I'm concerend - none
I believe that cannabis should be legalised, as it is in cities like Amsterdam - where people over the age of 18 can buy it in registered cafes. This would ensure that the growing of cannabis could be controlled - many of the pesticides used on cannabis plants are very dangerous and this could be stopped; it would mean that decent people wouldn't have to resort to buying from criminals, and the government could tax it.
People's main arguments against cannabis legalisation is that it is physically dangerous - and recent research shows that it may cause psychosis and paranoia.
I fail to see how smoking cannabis is anymore physically dangerous than smoking cigarettes - cigarettes cause lung cancer, heart disease, emphysema etc. And yet cigarettes are perfeclty legal - you can buy as many was you want & destroy your body with them, because the government percieve that freedom of choice to be a human right.
It is also argued that, where cannabis legalised, the streets would be full of dangerous users. Well, has anyone been down their local high street at pub closing time lately? Alcohol, which again it is perfectly legal to buy, fuels horrific brawls, and encourages criminal behaviour. As many users of cannabis point out, it's unlikely that you ever feel hyped up to fight people after a spliff - most people experience a mellow, peaceful buzz, inspiring at worst, sleepiness and drowsiness - not the urge to smash a shop window or throw a punch like after 10 pints of Stella.
Whilst we're at it, Alcohol (perfectly legal to buy over the age of 18, and often brought under that age in some dodgy off-licences) can cause apsolutely horrific damage to the body following continuos use - liver faliure, cancer, brain damage, Korsakoffs syndrome. In some extreme cases, the Hepatic vein can 'back up' because it can't process all the alcohol. This vein then ruptures at the back of your throat & unless you're lucky, you will choke on your own blood. (Not to mention that alcohol is physically addictive and Cannabis is not)
To adress the idea that Cannabis use is related to psychosis; firstly, the studies into this fail to demonstrate cause and effect. It may be that Cannabis use causes Psychosis - or it may be that people already pre-disposed to Psychosis are attracted to using Cannabis. And, of course, Alcohol misuse leads to brain damage, memory loss, tremors etc.
The final argument is that if Cannabis where legalised, the ammount of people using it would increase. This has not been the case in countries like Holland, and I don't see why it would be so here.
I honestly do not see why the goverment legalises sale of Alcohol in this country and still outlaws the use of Cannabis.
Summary: Legalise it!

~*pink-pilgrim*~ - 27.11.07 To make this a VH review I would have liked to see more discussion on the topic. Your viewpoint was very one sided and in the 'discussion' section it would be nice to see other views and accurate data...there is no disputing it Cannabis is dangerous and whilst it is down to each person to decide its not fair to assume that its harmless! |
