Should cannabis be legalised?

Advantages: Increased economic production, lower crime rates, destruction of the black market, regulation.

Disadvantages: Lots of pissed off conservative types...probably.

An extremely old, if a little tired topic.

In my opinon this drug should be legalised, it is remarkably non-toxic substance with significant medical benifits and one of the largest consumer bases of any product (legal or otherwise) worldwide ;)

If it were legal then not only would law enforcement and judiciary systems and prisons save countless millions but production and distribution could be controlled ensuring a quality product that harms no-one though potential impurites (sand blasting etc in bud form and plastic and god knows what the hell else in hash form).

It would be a boon for business as the government would be able to tax it and coffee shop style enterprises could ensure that it is not made so easily availible to minors (its easier to get a bag of weed than it is to get a pint in a pub, dealers dont ask for ID too often lol).

I feel that were it to be legalised that people should be allowed to produce their own at home (perhaps a limit of 5 plans etc like in other countries in the past) for personal consumption. Wholesale black market dealing of the product without regard to tax and other duties could still be illigal (is it is with every other product) .

Its certainally a more complex issue than the points I have outlined breifly here, but at any rate, we have had a prohibition on cannabis for years and years and it has totally failed to control the manufacture, distribution or consuption of this product.

Unfortunately people will die in drug related killings, but this is because the drug is illigal. The only market for the drug is the black market, and with no ombudsmen or legal channels to resolve disputes in the black market, violence is the only option.

Cannabis is not a gateway drug as is often claimed, and id like to see one heroin or crack addict that started their drug taking with cannabis and not tobacco or alcohol.

Also, its not as if everyone would be spending their whole time stoned and driving, operating heavy machinery etc while under the influence any more than they might do now or any more than people do such things drunk already, dont tell me the only reason you dont go through your whole life in a smokey haze is because it is illigal, whatever happended to your morals if so?

Finally, if you make something that isnt real crime illigal you still create real criminals, as we have in this country.

(edited to include some points i made in the comments section)

Summary: Lets do it :)

Good points. Even if hard drugs users start off with cannabis, it would more be a case of if you're going to try harder drugs, you start with weed, than weed leads to harder stuff.
