Advantages: Less ethnic tension, Less in prison, No riots

Disadvantages: Higher crime, Higher delinquency, Higher robberies

Ok I smoked a spliff or two at college and the fact that it was illegal made it more of a buzz than it was. Law breaking was throwned upon in our family so the moment I left the family bubble I couldn?t wait to be naughty.
The decision this week by the home secretary is far more worrying and perhaps dangerous because it seems to be have done mainly to deflect the bad news of even worse crime figures. Fairly ironic as most pot smokers have a criminal tendencies away from the middle classes.

The measures that Blunkett has called for make little difference to current policing as coppers have been turning a blind eye to possession in the rough areas for the last twenty years. The police caused the Brixton riots in the eighties over doing stop and search on a culture that sees it as a recreational drug full stop.
Its ironic that twenty years on that the MET have gone full circle by casually legalizing it in the Lambeth borough.

Another reason Blunkett has taken this knee jerk policy reaction to quickly is that it seems to be mainly about freeing up the police to tackle more serious crime. In the Daily Mail today it said that most serious crime is committed in the ten most dangerous inner city zones.
These are probably also the areas that have a far higher pot smoking crime culture, areas where the police don?t really want to be today with guns and drugs running the ghettos.

Another more sensitive issue is that most stop and searches are done disproportionately on black and Asian people resulting in an embarrassingly high arrest rates.
Its better for everyone involved in that process that that time and money isn?t wasted on cautions and directed towards busting down on crack and heroine.
But if the police are backing of stop and search because of the friction they are also not finding offensive weapons and harder drugs on those people that would have been searched for acting suspiciously.

The polic
e and New Labor are saying look its out of control and unpoliceable so why pour money into detection for soft drugs for little improvements in arrest rates and community relations. But if they do turn their back on Brixton and the inner cities and put out the message to the young ones that its ok to smoke pot now it can only be a negative message.
If we keep it as it is at least there will be no great fresh swathes of children thinking about trying it now almost ready to go.
The relaxation will mean a drug dealer at the gates of every school in London?s ghettos.

Most drugs in Britain?s inner cities are sold by black people to white people, a similar ratio in `Rap music` is also prevalent. By saying its ok to take `ganja` in the poor areas because the policing isn?t adequate is a worrying state of affairs.
Its fair to say that the increase of dealers flooding Lambeth has pushed the borough to the top of the violent robbery and street crime charts to, also issued by the Home Secretary.
If this ?experiment? is to be repeated in other high drug class B abuse areas then they can expect a similar worrying rise.

Once the government turn their backs on high crime areas and the inner cities you end up with the Los Angeles gang crisis and high murder rates as un-policed zones allow drugs to take over.
When the local news cable stations there shows a copper punching a black guy with a black cop looking on, you know how quickly that can burn a city down.
And with a lot of the population high on crack there it can go on for days. We have to stop our kids seeing drug use as exceptable now!.

Those of you who bring up the boring argument that alcohol is far more damaging to communities than class B have a case. But surely the main reason alcohol is more damaging is because it is legal and freely available. Something pot will be the way this liberal government is going.
Theres also a strong case that people who have addictive pe
rsonalities will move on to the next illegal hit now marijuana is passe`.

Most pot smokers picked up the habit from tobacco and it stands to reason that may be tempted to experiment after that, especially people who have nothing else going on in their lives and use it as an escape from their grim reality. Teachers and the under class!.
The move to legalize it is irrational and badly timed considering the rising crime rate. I get the feeling this has been rushed through to stop the police having to put anymore over represented black people in the full up prisons.
The current population is the highest ever, even though we are in a time of relative prosperity and high employment. But we all know that most pot smokers arrested tend to be white unemployed youths that don?t particularly enjoy work.

The message is simple from NewLabor, we will turn a blind eye on usage but will concentrate on busting the dealers with tougher sentences. Blair is saying what every parent isn?t to their kids. Drugs are no longer bad for you and should be tolerated.

What do you think would happen if ALL illegal drugs were legalised, licensed and taxed? To crime as well as addiction rates? In the short term and the long term?
