Advantages: Reduce Crime, Reduce Violence, Right of Choice
Disadvantages: Addictive, Health
On balance I consider cannabis should be legalised. We live in an imperfect world. We consume many things which are not good for us.In general we have freedom of choice. If what we consume affects others an argument could be made to ban same. However this would involve the banning of alcohol and many other things.I mention alcohol because it was in fact banned in the US.WE all know the result of that. One of the arguments in favour of canabis is that it is not chemically addictive. This argument is false as it becomes addictive through regular use. However so do many other harmful things. In fact virtually everything we consume can be harmful. We do not ban fat people from eating. We do not force people to stay within recommended limits for alcohol. Cannabis is harmful. It is also enjoyable.Used in moderation it is far less harmful than alcohol or nicotine.Yes one joint contains far more harmful substances than one cigarette. However the average cigarette smoker will consume in excess of 100 per week. Cannabis can lead to stronger chemically addictive drugs.Effectively the same can be said for alcohol. Far less damage is caused by people on cannabis than alcohol.Cannabis among other things is legal in Amsterdam - I am not aware that it has had any negative effects. Legalising cannabis would eliminate a lot of crime associated with drugs.Drug barons pushers etc in the cannabis trade would be virtually put out of business. Sensible use of cannabis will cause far less harm to both user and others than alcohol. It is a matter of choice for each individual whether they choose to use more harmful drugs just as it is at present a matter of choice whether people who drink alcohol also consume drugs. Cannabis in itself is no more harmful than many of the things we consume.Unlike alcohol people do not become violent as a result of cannabis - quite the opposite.People have the right to choose and they are choosing. The problem at
present is the price of cannabis, crime as a result of the price and the involvement of criminals in the business. Cut down on crime and criminals and legalise canabis - it will be legalised sooner or later - better sooner than later. Of course there will be some who will disagree with my opinion. That is their right. Cannabis is a mood altering substance. We use many of these - anti depressants etc.Used correctly these substances which clearly affect the brain are very helpful to many people. People who have little or no knowledge of the nature of depression and addiction will probably take a negative attitude in respect of my opinion. Mood altering substances do not improve the mind - they are not intended to.They can also have for some people negative side effects. No knowledgable person would suggest banning such substances either existing or as will be the case new ones in the future. People often refer to average human intelligence - they should refer to average human stupidity. I have only once tried cannabis.Whatever the effect I had no interest in trying it again. I have considerable personal knowledge of the whole nature of addiction and while I do not consider myself an expert I am a qualified addiction counsellor.I practice very little now which will be understood by anyone who has experience in this area.

34_hobbes - 31.08.02 I enjoyed reading your opinion and I think it should be legalised. I don't think it is a gateway drug to trying other drugs. I also think that alcohol has a worse effect on people than cannabis. I think the majority of people would feel mellow after having a joint, while alcohol can often lead to violence. |
