Advantages: Protection, Help, Clean up the business
Disadvantages: Could be costly to police
I live in Salford not far from a road where al the local prostitutes are based so I see them on a regular basis. I am also open and will talk freely about sex and the industry without embarrassment so I feel that I should give my opinion on the legalisation of prostitution.
As the other writers have mentioned it is not always the fault of the prostitute that they got into the business in the first place, and many nowadays are only in it to fund drug habits and this is probably why prostitution is frowned on so much in the UK. Although it is illegal to solicit the services of a prostitute many police authorities turn a blind eye to both street and brothel type activities. The fact is that apart from scare clients away, the police themselves cannot really do much to stop prostitution from happening. Therefore, we are in a situation where prostitution will always happen and we have the choice. Do we try to ignore it and let it continue to be the seedy profession that it is with no regulation, or do we fro come to the times and legalise it so that it can be controlled more successfully?
It is my opinion that prostitution should definitely be legalised. The prostitutes themselves need protecting in some way and there also needs to be some way of ensuring that the sex industry stays out of the way of those individuals that are offended by it. By this, I mean that with regulation there could be legalised areas where prostitutes can offer their services out of the way of housing estates and in particular children. Maybe there could even be prostitution clinics where the workers could seek help and advice about such things as protection and fighting drug addiction. I am aware that prostitution houses do not allow their workers to be addicts, something which I feel is very wrong. Many prostitutes are addicts and the organisations that set out to aide them should do so whether they are addicted to drugs or not.

- 10/11/04 It may not be everyones cup of tea but prostitution will never go away. I say legalise it, control it and more importantly, protect these women and girls who risk their lives every time they step onto the streets.

- 09/11/04 Can of worms really, I guess we need to strip away (no pun!) the taboos, and get it discussed more openly. Thanks for your well written opinion
