Should prostitution be legalised?

Advantages: Not sure

Disadvantages: Not sure

*updated*
Prostitution apparently is the worlds oldest profession (from what I have been told, I have no personal experience whatsoever, other than having to listen to people go on about it frequently in my previous job!).

If it has been around longer than any other "job" then surely it stands to reason that it will be around for some time to come, its not going to stop just because the law says it should.

I dont think that prostitution should be promoted, I would not like to be watching hollyoaks, then when the adverts come on to see someone selling their "services", but if it is legalised then there may be many benefits.

* It may help with disease control.

* It may reduce the number of rapes.

* It may reduce violence.

* It may free courts for more serious crimes

There could be disadvantages too, such as

* More permissive society

* More Prostitution

* More Clients

* Lower Morals

Taking each in turn....

* It may help with disease control

Health care for prostitutes is at the whim of the manager (aka pimp) or the girl/boy/man/woman/mixed/other itself.

If it was controlled then tests could be enforced to check for stds, thereby protecting both customers and providers.

I reckon that they should have to go private though, why should the NHS pay for a work related exam?

* It may reduce the number of rapes.

Sex would be more freely available, so maybe
less barstewards would go down that road, may not, maybe some things never change, who knows.

* It may reduce violence.

Pimps would no longer be required, but no doubt they would still exist, for as sure as eggs are eggs, and taxes have to be paid by the honest, pimps will find a way to keep going.

Also violence from clients would be reduced, as prostitutes could report it to the police without fear o
f prosecution, as it is, they either put up with it, get someone else to get revenge (illegal and not the way forward)
or risk the law.

* It may free courts for more serious crimes

There are many, many more serious crimes than general prostition, two willing adults copulating is not the crime of the century,
however child prostitution or forced prostition is a baaaddd thing and should be dealt with harshly.

* More Clients

The illegal aspect puts people off, teenagers full of hormones may go to a prostitute to hear a whore-moan (if its legal), and regret it later in life.

* Lower Morals

Is it just me, or are morals degrading all the time, legalising it may speed up the process. Just popping for a f*** dear, see you after eastenders etc.

Plus its was bad enough listening to the idiots at work talk about sex, if its legalised it would only get worse.
(mental note, next time i want a job developing computer software, work in a brothel, not the place i used to work in.)

* More permissive society

Maybe this should be in both categories, good and bad.

But come on guys and gals, I went for a quite pint the other week and had a gaggle of girls ripp my trousers and underpants of in front of a whole pub (my luck must be changing!)

If I had been female I bet it would have not been so funny, no Im a bloke, blokes pay for sex etc etc - more permissive society and thats the road its may go down, its like that to some extent allready.

* More Prostitution

Well, if its legal, it will increase.

anyway, enough, Im rambling, better stop before you all get bored.

And on a final thought - How many of us sell our souls each day to big corporations, or to some extent even our bodies, harming them by the work that is done?

Hmmmmm can't see personally that it would affect rape figures *at all* as rape as a crime is far more about abuse of power than about sex....

Good coverage, but perhaps not quite enough of your own considered opinion for me. Naturally hard to do on something you haven't tried for yourself. :-) However, a 'Useful' is as high as I mark for any op where the reviewer has no personal experience of the topic so well done. - TK
