Should prostitution be legalised?

Advantages: Getting rid of pimps

Disadvantages: Moral acceptance of prostitution

The question of legalising the oldest profession in the world is one which will no doubt plague us for many years.

Prostitution is not pretty. Women and men having sex for money, not for desire, and anyone who fools themselves about it is doing just that. Those that avail of the services of a prostitute should bear in mind what they are actually doing. You can fuzz the edges and try and see it in different lights, but the fact is that you are paying for sex. The question you should be addressing is why you need to do so.

The only argument I can see for legalising prostitution is that we must accept it as something that will always happen, no matter how socially evolved we become, and in that case we might as well make sure that the prostitutes can not be abused financially or otherwise by people who wish to profit from the activity. I say that this is a good idea.

The fact is that it will happen and so prostitutes should be able to ply their trade in a legal manner, pay their taxes, and having the right to earn money. At the end of the day it is better than having women with criminal records who in all likelihood were driven to this activity in desperation. There should be a register of prostitutes with regular health checks, and health checks for those who avail of their services.

Makes it clinical, make it something that is open, and I think less people will indulge in it. In one foul swoop an entire layer of criminality will be removed from society; pimps with their drugs and physical abuse, lost children etc... What must be done in consequence however is a reversal of the current laissez faire approach by the police. Prostitution outside the licensed premises should be harshly punished, so as pimps can't undercut the licensced premises and take advantage of young run aways.

All in all the benefits of a legalised trade are high. The question is who is willing to put aside their morals to acheive it?
