Advantages: Getting rid of an evil being
Disadvantages: May make him out to be a hero?
Saddam Hussein throughout the trial has kept an arrogant attitude and has never once shown any signs of remorse for his appalling crimes. When the sentence of death by hanging was pronounced on Saddam, his response was a rant “Long live Iraq! Long live the Iraqi people! Down with the traitors!” Now this, (all being televised) was another way of showing he had centre stage and he took every opportunity to make himself out the Martyr! He then left the courtroom with a little smirk on his face, as if he had won. My first angry thoughts were, he should hang!
No! He shouldn’t hang! Firstly, because, doesn’t that not make us all murderers too? Is this not showing the World, that if done legally, it is ok to take a life? Oh, how difficult it is to decide what to do with an Evil man like this!
Secondly, hanging is too good for him! If Saddam hangs he will have won, because in the eyes of most Arabs in Iraq, and indeed other Countries, they may well see it as he died a martyr. His own sons have been killed, Iraq is in ruins, and when he hangs— (with the whole World as spectators), many will see it as he defied the West, right to the end, therefore keeping his dignity and so dies a hero! I say, do not let him have this spectacle!
After accepting the fact that he is going to die, he even has the audacity to ask that he be shot by firing squad instead of being hanged like a criminal. Now, being shot by firing squad, is a right of any military man, which we know, but Saddam never served as a regular soldier, so why, oh why should we give him this honour, and let him die a Martyr? Even now, he is planning how best he would look in the history books! How evil is this man, that after all the atrocities he carried out, is still standing defiant and demanding us all to witness his death the way he wants it!?
If Saddam hangs, I personally think there should be other people made to face up to certain charges too. I believe the reason why the West didn’t want Saddam to stand trial in an international tribunal, was because such a tribunal would have revealed certain documents and testimonials as to the extent of US’s ‘turning a blind eye’ to Saddam’s crimes in the 1980’s, and they were indeed supporting Iraq against Iran during their war.
Quite early in that war, President Reagan sent Donald Rumsfeld to Baghdad to meet Saddam Hussein and offer him American assistance. The US also knew that Saddam had been using chemical weapons against Iranian soldiers regularly. It was also well known by then that Hussein was engaging in widespread repression. Many thousands of individuals were being imprisoned, brutally tortured or viciously executed. So, were the Western governments not just as guilty for ‘turning a blind eye’ to all of this, 20 odd years ago?
Saddam has not had a fair trial, but he is guilty anyway, and whether the trial was corrupt or not, or where ever it had been held, it still would have had the same outcome, but it is more the publicity he has acquired from all this, that worries me.
Now he is the victim of a state-sponsored public lynching, and so, for many people, he will die a martyr. I say, don’t give him the privilege of dying a hero as he is NOT one! He is an evil mass murderer! Throw him somewhere and let him rot. Let him suffer for a few years, the same way he brought so much suffering to many thousands of people!
Summary: Don't give him the Pleasure!
