Should smoking be banned in public places?Newest Review: ... it. The ban came in to force on the 1st July 2007 at 00:00. What a joyous occasion this was. I know love the fact that I can go to the pub, and even venture into the bars and clubs in town, without coming home reeking of smoke. There have been a few times in the past when I have been speaking to someone, and a smoker tries to squeeze past and burns my clothes with their cigarette. When I first heard of the governments plans to ban smoking is public places, I was thrilled. As a non-smoker, this was music to my ears. Although I was optimistic about how they were going to enforce it. The ban came in to force on the 1st July 2007 at 00:00. What a joyous occasion this was. Personally the ban for me has changed my life and health considerably. Firstly, I work in a bar, and when the ban came in and everyone stopped smoking it made a massive difference: *I no longer had to sweep up all the ash and cigarette butts from the floor. *I was no longer burned by drunk people waving cigarettes around when I went out to collect glasses in. *I could actually breath properly for the whole of a shift. *I didnt smell horrible when I got home, thus keeping my house smell free as well. *I no longer had to put up with customers blowing smoke in my face when they were standing at the bar ordering. I am broadly in favour of this ban - there is the argument that it is an infringement of smokers rights but then again isn't it a violation of non smokers rights by filling the air they breath with smoke? There is also the effect that it has had on pubs which is actually one very negative side effect. I think the government should lower taxes on them in order to make up for the negative influence on their incomes that the ban has had, particularly when you consider that these pubs are often vital parts of communities. Then again it has also had a positive effect in some (mainly in more affluent areas) where people who didn't go due to smoke now visit more often - but ...
