Advantages: Clean air, health benifts.
Disadvantages: People's right.
This issue will always cause conflict as there are poeple both agianst it and for it.
My reasons for why i agree with the somking ban is the obvious one, health. No one likes to be unhealty and it is almost offensive to have to inhale other peoples second hand smoke, and increase the risk of cancer and heart disease. Aswell as this in a smoke free enviroment the air is cleaner and the smell is fresher which in genreal makes a more suitable enviorment, especially in restaurants where the smell of smoke can put you off your food.
However everyone has the right to do what they want (within the confines of the law) and somkers have thei reasons for smoking, the stress relief, compulsive behavior and addiction. I personally belive that a smoking ban should be controlled by the individual instituion as opposed to a uniform ban across the counrty. I have found the smoking ban to be the killer of the great british pub, which i find to be absurd as, those who go to a pub expect the pub enviroment, which for many years has inclueded smokers.
It would seem to me that the smoking ban is largely ineffective as any one who wants to smoke, does, and it is not particualry hard to find the loopholes in the legislation, for example as soon as the pub doors close, its no longer a public places, leaving who ever "happens" to still be inside the freedom to smoke.
I think the act should be repealled and the onus should be put on the indivual public places to decide whether the ban should be applied.
Summary: Governments problem.

thedevilinme - 16.05.08 I agree that they should be banned in geenral public areas but not pubs, where you go for nasty vices. |
