Advantages: LESS MESS, LESS INFLUENCE ON YOUNGSTERS
Disadvantages: NONE
The debate over should smoking be banned in public places. Well I am a smoker and I believe it should. I remember when I went over to Ireland when they had launched there smoking ban. It was on there news about it and the fact they couldn't smoke in pubs or in the work place. The pub wasn't a problem and I remember instantly thinking that the pubs were more pleasant and didn't smell of smoke and they simply went outside to smoke. As always in the West of Ireland you enjoy the craic and always a welcoming atmosphere. I remember listening to the news there and the fact people couldn't smoke in the workplace which raised issues with people who worked in their own homes who if they smoked during their working hours at home were actually breaking the law. The HGV drivers who would be breaking the law by smoking in there cabin if alone. I remember thinking that it was a fascinating debate.
When I went to Florida it became second nature to only smoke in designated areas and I actually thought it was a good idea, not only protecting people from second hand smoke but also from promoting smoking to younger people who can be influenced.
I feel that when cigarettes were first introduced they promoted and especially to the females that it was sexy and sophisicated to be seen with a cigarette. How I'm glad that times have changed as it is anything but sexy and sophisticated.
When the ban came to the UK that we couldn't smoke in public places such as pubs, shopping malls and restaurants I was pleased and have no objection to going outside for a cigarette if I choose to but I have to say it soon becomes routine not to want to smoke when you are enjoying an evening out just as when at home I would never smoke in my home or even near anyone when in the garden. I would also have no objection to not being able to smoke in other outside public places though feel that adequate areas for smoking should be introduced for those who choose to smoke.
This will make smoking less attractive to younger people and also help keep the streets tidier. How often have you seen a young child bend down and pick up a dirty cigarette dimp, very unpleasant and this would reduce this as well as making the outdoors more pleasant.
Smoking is without a doubt a one of the biggest health issues but let's not forget it's an addiction and people have the choice to smoke or not but I do feel that a high majority of smokers wouldn't object to areas where they could smoke if it kept other people away from the effects of their smoking.
Summary: SMOKING SHOULD BE IN DESIGNATED AREAS

- 20/10/08 Im concerned where the loss taxes will come from after we clamp down on every vice. Surely a pub is aplace of vices and we go there knowing that? Why on earth cant smokers smoke there? |
