Should smoking be banned in public places?

I have never smoked and never will. Neither has my husband. There is a couple of Smokers in my family and friends, and that is up to them. If they come to the house, they are free to go into the garden to smoke, but they must shut the door, so the smell doesn't come into the house, and they must put their mess into the bin.

Am not sure if it was Scotland that got the smoking ban first, or if Ireland beat us to it. I know that we were ahead of England, and smoking has been banned in public places for a couple of years now.

Being a non smoker, I doubt you will be surprised to know I am all for it. Although we don't go out that often, it is nice to sit in a restarant or pub in the nice fresh air. For some reason this change in law has angered so many smokers. The ban has taken away smokers rights, so they say. Why should they have to leave their table, go outside in the rain just to do what they want to do? With so many smokers hanging around the entrance to pubs and restaurants, then the smell is particularly strong. They also don't seem to get it when you hold your hand over your mouth to not have to breathe in the stentch - in fact i've had to odd glower when I have done this, but I don't care.

The biggest difference I have noticed since the ban is when i've been abroad. Since i've just come back from Germany I have got a taste (literally)of what live used to be like surrounded by smoke. The only non smoking place I found in Frankfurt was the train station, and it was nice to be down their in the clean air, however when you came up to street level it was impossible to taste fresh air. It seemed like 98% of Germans are smokers, and the air was heavy with smoke. I feel like I was on 20 a day over there through passive smoking and it wasn't long before my clothes and hair stank. Then again over their in Kebab shops, the guy's are cutting the donner meat with a fag hanging out of their mouths, as was the fruit and veg guy, smoking all over the fresh produce - no thanks!

Unfortunately a lot of businesses are complaining since the smoking ban, then they have lost customers and are losing profits - Hello!, we are in a recession. Perhaps people can't afford to spend on luxuries how they used to, due to lack of money, and redunancies. Also if people really went to pubs/restaurants/bingo halls because they liked the place, then having to go outside to smoke shouldn't make any difference to the person. Also there will have been people who didn't want to go out to get breathed on with smoke, so i'm sure there will be a different breed of customer for the pubs and clubs.

I'm for the ban, as to me it has made a world of difference, and hope we will stay this way.

so it's because of the smoking ban, and not due to inflation/redundencies/re cession?
