Should smoking be banned in public places? |

Advantages: I'm not breathing second hand smoke
Disadvantages: Idiots trying to justify smoking in a public place
As someone who has grown up with both parents as smokers, I have a strong view on smoking.
Smoking should be banned full stop, let alone in public places. Now, I appreciate this is never going to happen due to the revenue it creates for the government, as well as the national outcry it would cause. However, senseless bans on the grounds of health and safety are common on trivial and menial activities, yet smoking related deaths are the second highest killer behind road deaths in the UK and nothing is done to prevent this. Mind-boggling.
It's also frustrating when people try and compare smoking to drinking. If someone in a bar is drinking a pint of beer next to me, I'm not drinking it with them. If someone is sat there smoking, thanks to their second hand smoke, I am not only smoking it with them, over a sustained period of time, I am risking my long term health.
Smoking in a public place is utterly selfish behaviour, particularly those idiots who blow their smoke in your face with complete disregard. Yet despite their disregard for my health, if I smack them in the face for doing so, despite a black eye only being a short-term health problem, I would be liable for prosecution! I'm not trying to justify violence, it's just remarkable how hypocritical the country is.
The notion of smoking in general repulses me, and the logic is, well, illogical. It is money spent to drastically reduce your life (and those around you), something which you can never get back.
Don't get me wrong, I don't lose sleep over the issue, but it's something which is feel strongly about, particularly as I watch loved ones around me suffer because of the poison contained within a tiny stick.
Summary: If you would like to waste your time and money by smoking, then do it in your space and your time

- 05/09/09 Your so unlikely to suffer any health problems from passive smoking it doesnt register. Yu are from abusive alcohlics through crime, drunk driving and pub night out violence. |

- 04/09/09 I agree that smoking should be banned full stop - it's awful when you get stuck walking behind someone who's smoking! |
