Should smoking be banned in public places?

Advantages: Respect for others is an attractive quality

Disadvantages: Smokers getting grumpy when they cannot get their fix

Ok = this is the moment this ex poacher turns gamekeeper.

Yes I think smoking should be banned in public places. I smoked for many many years and I had no idea until I became a non smoker, how revolting it smelt and how absolutely vile it made non smokers feel.

When I used to be told how I stank of cigarettes, I could not smell a thing. When people coughed because of my smoke, I thought they were being a pain.

I know so much differently now and it really is an extremely unsociable habit.

But I am not going to tell anyone whether they can or cannot smoke- it is their decision and I will not be critical. But I will say that non smokers should not have to suffer the side effects.

I am truthfully saying this because of the smoke and the smell, not just because I am now an ex smoker. I am also a vegetarian, but I wouldn't dream of saying you should not be allowed to eat meat in public- it does not impact on my life if you do so- only the animal has suffered.

I don't have a garden and when the weather is lovely, I would enjoy sitting in the outside area of a cafe having a cuppa, but I rarely can because that is where everyone is puffing away.

So I strongly support each individuals right to smoke, but I do not support that they inflict their smoking on others.

I equally don't like that smokers have to risk getting pneumonia as well as everything else as they go outside in freezing conditions to feed their habit.

We need to find solutions that suit everybody.

I am very glad I have finally given up, and apologise to everyone who I inflicted my habit on- I really didn't appreciate how I was affecting those around me. So for that I am very sorry.

Summary: Breathing is essential-please let me do it

I still smoke but I also can't stand the smell on people, in places or cars. I smoke roll-ups and find tailor made fags smell a lot worse and make a lot more smoke, they are banned in my house! As is smoking during the day and in my car or in any rooms my kids are in! I'm a very strict smoker and totally sympathise with non smokers not liking the smell etc

It strikes me that ex-smokers often become the most strongly antis around - you've seen it from inside and outside, so probably understand better than those of us who've never smoked. Well done on quitting, too.

Personall y I wouldn't ban smoking in public entirely, but I would add two extra restrictions: one, it would be banned in queues, since people can't get away there; and two, it would be banned in doorways, most of which now stink. I believe Queensland won't allow you to smoke within 5m of a door - good for them.

It's true, just because it's banned inside of public places, doesn't mean we don't suffer from it outside.
