I myself am a smoker so I am trying to tackle this issue from both sides.
I think in certain circumstances that smoking should be allowed but in others I agree it shouldn’t. For instance although as I said I smoke, I don't agree with it in restaurants where families are eating as I think its rude to smoke here. I often don't light up even if you are allowed to smoke at the table. However I find certain places operate a smoking and non smoking section and the stupid thing about this is usually they are in the same part of the room, with just certain tables offering the choice, so what is the point of this, you still end up sitting next to each other and for a non smoker not being able to avoid it.
I can last without a cigarette if I have too, but I really think on long journeys such as trains and flights you should have a smoking section, as for example I have just been on a 5 hour plane flight and would have enjoyed a cigarette with my meal and drink!
The main thing I always think as a smoker is to have respect and use your initiative in places that allow you to smoke as even then sometimes its not really fair on others, I feel comfortable if I am in an area with just smokers and then I will light up, I would not inflict my smoke on others deliberately. But more and more places are turning to all non-smoking and I don't think this is fair as any smoker enjoys a cigarette after a meal and with a drink, and I certainly would not go into a cafe or restaurant that said non smoking.
