Should smoking be banned in public places?

Advantages: Less smoke

Disadvantages: Smokers get belligerent

I am NOT a smoker, and yet I disagree fundamentally with some of the more extreme policies being undertaken against smokers. Thye are now being told that not only can they not smoke in certain buildings, they might not be allowed to smoke in restaurants and pubs!

It's ridiculous.

Now I know that a lot of people find smoke offensive, but in such pubs as Wetherspoons where they utilise good ventilation, smoking is really not that much of a problem. I think it is awful that in a shopping centre, shoppers have to go OUTSIDE to have a cigarette. It's absoloutely ridiculous, but no one seems to notice!! Smokers have a right to have a cigarette if they like, if you don't really like it... MOVE! If at a table, you can ask them politely not to do it if it bothers you that much, most smokers will look sheepish and put it out. Except now they are getting defiant, feeling blocked in everywhere.

I am not an advocate of smoking, it's a bad thing, but you really shouldn't put smokers in a place where they feel the need to be defiant to indulge their illness. And it is an illness... You don't tell fat people they can't get on planes because other people find it offensive (and I am a largish person myself - so no bombardments please), you tolerate it. Smoke is more intrusive, but really not a problem if you have no smoking designated areas. It's crazy when you walk into an airport departure lounge and see vast swathes of empty seats, and then smokers packed into a tiny space, lining the walls crouching on the floor to remain within their little smoker's ghetto.

Let them out, able to have some space, and quit trying to force them to quit. They'll do it when they're ready. In the meantime give us non-smoking areas and smoking areas. People prefered it that way - it's much more tolerant.

I'm not exactly sure where I stand on this but my sister and one of my best friends smoke ALL THE TIME. I never have a go at them, but to be honest it does sometimes annoy me as I'm breathing in half their smoke, which wouldn't be so bad if they didn't have a fag in their mouth 24/7! It doesn't seem right that smokers jeopardize other people's health like this without a second though. And believe me, if you asked them to put it out 80% (of young people at least) wouldn't. But I think you're right in that it shouldn't be banned, but I think the 'no smoking areas' are essential.

Whatever you say, smoke carries & it stinks! I don't really want to smell like an ashtray after a night out!
The difference with fat people & smoking is that fat people are only harming themselves (unless they sit on someone! Joke, sorry!), after all it's their heart but when I breath someone elses smoke it's my lungs, why should I have to tolerate it?

I don't know whether you have read my opinion on the matter or not. I agree with you that smoking is an illness but I have an illness which is brought on by cigarette smoke. (asthma) I have done what you suggest, ask people to put theier cigarettes out but this has caused arguements and one girl even went to hit me once, and yes I did ask politely. Nearly every time I have to end up going home short of breath.
This was a good opinion though, well done. I did mean to put VU but clicked on U by mistake, sorry.
