Advantages: Some people would feel really good about spoiling others fun
Disadvantages: the same people would only find something else to moan about.
I don't smoke. I tried it at school and started for about two months. However, i am far too tight to smoke. My girlfriend does smoke and i work in a very busy smokey pub so i think i am quite used to being in this kind of environment. Working in a busy pub i often hear people commenting or complaining about others smoking. The complaints people make are often along the lines of 'infringing on my human rights', 'poisoning the atmosphere' and 'you choose to smoke, i don't'. The argument of banning smoking in public places is a pointless one to say the least. Sure smoking is not a nice habit to us non smokers and we believe that our health is being damaged but does this justify a ban ?. So how would a ban be enforced ? Would people be fined for smoking, ejected from the premises, socially shunned, booed or spat at ?. How far would we take this ? I dont enjoy standing near a person who has bad breath should there be a non teeth brushing section ? The country is damaging itself in many more ways than smoking. Our cars are killing the atmosphere. Last year the major of london announced plans to charge people for bringing their cars into the city. How much have cigarette prices risen in the past few years ? All measures to take money away from people who are ' damaging the environment ' How about Mrs Bloggs who tuts about people smoking in the pub next to her then goes home where she has left a few lights on to deter burglars. Uses her dishwasher every day, doesn't recycle and fills up the kettle all the way when making her self a cup of tea. Nobody is perfect but some are more tolerant than others. There are many publicised cases of people becoming ill because of passive smoking and this is terrible, however, the local pub will always be a sanctuary for smokers and restaurants have no smoking areas. So i do not believe smoking should be banned in public places as this is truly the infringme
nt of human rights, and next time someone close is annoying you by smoking just move away from them or soon smokers will want to ban whinging in public places.

- 25/03/02 Yeah, agree about the pub stuff - you gotta expect it in pubs. I think it's out of order in places like restaurants though - but it's a tough thing to decide. |
