Advantages: We need sports
Disadvantages: Does not necessarily build character
It is my observation that team sports is not an effective method for the development of character building. This is an observation within the amatuer setting rather than professional. It may be of assistance if those in professional sports displayed a better sense of team and individual character since the top sports person is a role model. If they behave badly off-field it justifies everybody elses actions (ask the young people who they are modelled on). Teams are like any other group and you will have those who dominate and those who will be dominated. A Coach does not go in for assetiveness training to increase the ability of an individual to defend themselves against other team members. After all, they are there to coach skills in the sports. Those who have better skills have a higher ranking in the team. In young people this can lead to a sense of superiority which is not a good personal characteristic if you are using sports to build traits which are transferable to social and employment settings. It puts peoples noses out. The bottom line is that sports could be good if the method of instruction was to change - the focus has to be on the skills, but there has to be a better balance with istruction on how to relate to others, contain the sense of self importance and how to be assertive.
