Advantages: Increase the fitness of our nation
Disadvantages: Give lots of kids a miserable time
Nowadays people basically study a set of subjects up to a certain age, 14 or 16 - after which they get to choose what they study, be it via GCSEs or A-levels. However, in GCSEs there's always the hardcore subjects, Maths, English and Science that are obligatory...along with PE? I assume that the motive behind this is up to a certain age it is necessary to give all students a similar basic education - and after that they're deemed responsible enough to decide whether to continue in a subject or not. I personally think this is a suitable situation for PE. I think up to a certain age it is not only desirable, but also necessary. I've never been particularly good or fond of PE, but looking back it was very useful. For a start it keeps you fit - secondly it teaches you more practical skills on how to co-ordinate your body - thirdly it can also teach you mental skills such as how to behave as part of a team etc. Of course there are going to be kids that hate it, kids that are bad at it, kids that are bullied within it - but that's the case with all subjects. The important step comes when you decide to give the kids their own responsibility in deciding - which I think should be done. At what age is a more contentious issue. But I think there is a point whereupon you stop learning as such, and instead do it to train or for enjoyment - and if you're not interested in training and don't find it fun then at that age I think you should be entitled to stop. The problem perhaps is corresponding this stop in PE to a certain step in education - the beginning of GCSE's, the end of GCSE's etc. Basically, Maths is considered important enough to be forced upon you until you're old enough to make a decent decision - and I don't see why that shouldn't be the case with sport.
