Advantages: I suppose exercise is good
Disadvantages: Confidence stripping, It doesn't do basic exercises, instead, daftness like handstands off boxes!, Sometimes does not make you much fitter
At present I am in school and PE is compulsory. I absolutely hate it. Words can not desacribe my hate for PE. Most people like it and think- Oh it makes you so much healthy but for some people does not make their mind healthy. Some of you reading this may have really adored it, some of you liking it but still thinking it should not be compulsory, hating it but thinking you should do it or hating it and is totally against it. It may make you healthy but it certainly doesn't build confidence. There are around 30 in my class and most like it. Now I know that most people like it but you do get your few who do not like it. I am not a lazy cant be bothered to do PE type but a genuine "I hate this" type. Now those people for Sports in school- Did you like it in school? If you did then think for a moment, have you, or did you have something you did not like in school and would rather not do? That is what some people are like. Many of you who are for it are for it because you like it or liked it. You may not have full understanding of what it feels like to not like PE. PE should be optional, for those people who DO want to do a PE lesson during school time then do so but for those who do not, they should be allowed to go to a library or something. After all I would rather study more for something useful in later life such as English or Maths instead of wasting valuble education playing something which can be done as an after school club or during play-time. I would also rather get my hole-work done in that time rather than doing PE and then having to waste your own free-time doing homework when you have spent lots of hours doing work in school. Also, about confidence building- I am not very confident and PE certainly doesn't point me into the direction of confidence- I think it nastily pointed me into the other direction! I mean, all these things about health problems are true but if parents were really concerned
about it and they weren't doing PE then they should organise a voluntary after school PE club. Also, it sometimes doesn't make you slimmer anyway. A good idea would be basic excersise like running on the spot, the treadmill ect. Why sports and dangourous gym? Why do you have do do Football, Rugby and Netball for the girls aswell as Tennis. If you wanted to be in a club or play that when you were older then sign up isn't it? Kids are active(mostly today anyway), I know computer games are played a lot know and I use the computer very frequently know but Kids do play ect. I mean, it is not as ifd 24 hours a day you are satb down and only move about 5 times in a day into the kitchen about 3 metres away. Confidence should be important too. Do not think,"well it's un-confident peoples fault they are not confident", because confidence does not suddenly come. And for many people Pe doesn't add confidence, it takes it off and it it just stupid because of this reason. I am not fat or anything but everyone should watch their diet. After all, I love swimming and when I go on holiday I swim ALL DAY. Swimming is very good exercise too. My school does not have this facility though. And if it did, leisurly swimming would be better. Infact, I suppose schools should do exercise but NOT TOO HARD. I think that it is a little bit too much. We have to do handstands of boxes in gym! I think we should do basic exercising like running and similar but not things like hanstands off boxes and things like that. If people want to do these things then, they can choose. I do think you should have some exercise but have a choice of what you do instead. Overall, I am in High School and I can tell you that if you do not like sport it is not good. Lots of my friends hate PE too. It's not 1 in a million people who do not like it, it is about 1 in 10 or even 1 in 20. PE does not make you confident so that is that
. Thank you for reading. Please if possible could you write a comment and rate Thank you.

- 07/04/03 Having now read your update I would suggest that you speak to your parents. Your fear sounds worse than a simple dislike. Being fearful even the day before PE is going to happen and the thought of PE causing you to cry sounds as though something is going on. It sounds as though you are being properly bullied. Not sure if it is by the teacher or by the children in your class. Either way, it needs to be dealt with.
If you are truly being humiliated by the other children then your PE teacher is not paying enough attention and this needs to be addressed. If it is your teacher who is doing the bullying then this needs to be addressed even more so.
PE may not be fun for all, I didn't particularly like it either as a child, but I certainly did not fear it.
Games, if taught properly, can teach an awful lot, ie team work, trusting others, how to encourage etc.
Please talk to someone about what is happening to you during PE. Do you have a welfare officer at school? Or a particularly sympathetic teacher or something?
I hope all goes well.

- 07/04/03 I think sport should be compulsory at Primary school - trying out various sports and finding out what they enjoy doing is important so they can make informed decisions about it in the future. Also for learning skills such as swimming for example, which could save lives. (I'd like to see self-defence taught in PE lessons too, it's physical exercise after all, and vital these days!).
However, I do think that by the time someone reaches High School, they're old enough to choose for themselves, and I really don't think sport should be cumpulsory at High School. I hated PE myself and I can honestly say that doing PE at school has never been of any use at all to me in adult life! Don't get me wrong I do enjoy sport now, but fun is the most important part of sport, and if you hate it you won't get anything out of it anyway. It is, quite literally, a waste of time if you don't enjoy it.
A good grasp of the more academic subjects are what have provided me with a living after leaving school, not how far I could run around the school field without passing out!
I've given you a 'very useful' rating, as I genuinely think you deserve it. You made a lot of excellent points, and presented them well. Well done Dan.

- 06/04/03 My rate wasn't a sympathy vote it was for the content and not whether I agreed with it or not.
Having read the update I can see the point about being bullied and shown up and if that happens it's no wonder you don't want to do PE.
If it's any consolation I was a chubster at school and felt embarrassed in the changing rooms and was laughed at when I struggled in the gym or at netball or running. I was very self conscious and shy back then. Years later I weight trained and gained confidence and got myself in very good shape. Much better than those who used to laugh and I guess I had the last laugh. Things change, just hang in there. |
