Should the monarchy be abolished?

Advantages: have nice jewelry

Disadvantages: take our money, discrimination

We are supposedly living in a country where people have equal rights and opportunities and yet we have a head of state that undermines this and contributes nothing to improve our society.

The law in Britain states that there can be no racial discrimination in the workforce, but have you ever seen a black person parading outside Her Majesty’s palace. And it is common knowledge that a prince/princess is not even allowed to marry a Protestant, never mind a Muslim or Jew. This is sending out the wrong message to young people. Although I don’t have a problem with religion in general, this attitude shows how old fashioned the monarchy is getting, in a world where the importance of religion is rapidly in decline.

Social division is also emphasised by the monarchy. We are all expected to be courteous in their presence and bow down to them just because they are aristocrats. They are only there because of who they were born to and not because of their intelligence. They are only rich because they sponge off the public’s money and so are no more superior than people on the dole.

They also represent the British Empire, and so the slavery and suffering which was caused in the colonies. Surely we do not want to hang on to this outdated, corrupt institution, which is costing us £75 million a year.

The proof that the monarchy is outdated is that only 12% of the population wants the monarchy to stay and most of the countries where the English monarchy has been the head of state have claimed independence.

Yes, there is the argument that they do a lot of work for charity. But surely it would be better to just give the £75 million directly to the charities. Publicising charities is much more effectively done by popstars, which again shows how old fashioned and unpopular the monarchy is.

In conclusion I will use the cliché ‘the world would be a better place’ without the monarchy.

Umm... I agree. In concept, it is a very bad thing that people are priveliged purely by who their parents are.

But we cannot ignore the huge benefits that the monarchy gives us in practice such as boosting tourism, boosting exports and helping open up new overseas markets for British companies.

And as for the constitutional alternatives, I shudder wne I think that we could end up like some other Republics.

Erm...the monarchy reinforces the idea of hereditary privilege and is therefore a bad thing...no matter what other benefits it brings?? Privilege is hard enough to fight as it is, without being officially sanctioned. :o)

OK - you found evidence that in the early days there was some slavery within the British Empire. I still stand by my main point though - overall, the British Empire was relatively benign (in comparison to other empires), and brought benefits to many of the territories it controlled.

Anyw ay these comments have veered off from the main point of the op. What do you think of the Monarchy? In concept, it's a bad idea, but in practice I think it brings a lot of economic benefits to the UK and there is little evidence that a Republic would provide many constitutional benefits.
