Advantages: Name Your Sport - It Probably Shows It.
Disadvantages: Subscription Fees Apply
Sky Sports is the umbrella name for the set of Sports Channels offered by the company BSkyB. They have been broadcast since 1990.
There are currently 5 channels, some of which are now available as separate channels in High Definition. The Channels are Sky Sports 1,2,3, Extra and Sky Sports News.
They are all subscription based channels apart from Sky Sports News which you can pick up by just having a Sky Dish, Decoder Box and an old Sky Card that you no longer pay a subscription on.
Sky Sports News in my opinion is a free offering because it acts as an advertisement for the subscription channels. It also, as do all of their sports channels, has TV commercials in the advertising breaks.
Sky Sports has more or less mopped up the rights to cover most of the major sporting events by outbidding the likes of the BBC and the ITV network.
In recent years, there has been sporadic competition from Channel 4 on cricket and more recently more of a serious challenge from Setanta Sports on soccer and golf especially but by and large if you are a big Soccer, Cricket, Darts, Rugby (both codes), Tennis, or American Football fan you really need to get Sky Sports.
It costs around £45 per month to subscribe to but you do get mountains of other entertainment, film, music, news and documentary channels thrown in.
Its best programmes of all in my opinion are Soccer Saturday with the peerless Jeff Stelling at the helm, Superleague live match coverage and International Test Match Cricket Coverage.
Recommendation, if you like sport and can afford it it's a great deal.

- 09/03/09 Sky Sports News is also subscription based now, as it comes as part of the News/Events Entertainment mix (minimum cost £16.50). Sky Sports News is however, free on terrestrial Freeview. Good review though! |
