Advantages: Non-stop sports!
Disadvantages: Cost
Sky Sports is pretty much a Ronseal product, it does what it says on the tin. Sports, sports and sports.
The romantic side of me has a bit of anger that a subscription channel has such a dominance of the sports market. Why should the Premier League, top class cricket etc etc be unavailable to people who aren't willing to shell out X amount per month? That said Sky's slick coverage and presentation soon wipes away such thoughts as I enjoy a Super Sunday of football, starting in the morning with Goals on Sunday and ending just before bed with Spanish Football.
Sky have the best presenters, commentators, camera crew, sound techs, directors, equpiment etc. As nice as it is to see top class sport on other channels, they can't match Sky's superb production.
I have to say thought that I think Sky Football would be a more apt channel name at times. Perhaps one channel solely dedicated to football and the other 2/3 to the lesser sports.
I love football but sometimes I feel other minority sports don't get enough coverage, squash and horse racing for example. Then again Sky are clearly catering to the mass market, who obviously want football.
Sky Sports doesn't come cheap but as long as people are prepared to pay the fee Sky will continued to A) charge it and B) increase it.
I'm not sure on the exact cost but I doubt the monthly fee is any more than a matchday ticket to any football game at professional level, a couple of cinema tickets, a half decent meal out or even a chart DVD.
Summary: It costs but probably good value if you want it.
