Slow Cooking

Description: Do you like slow cooking? Raw food and a liquid which is predominantly water (water, wine, stock, but not oil without ... more
Slow Cooking ... water) are placed in the slow cooker. The lid is put on and the cooker is switched on. The heating element heats the contents to a steady temperature in the 175–200°F (80–95°C) range. The temperature can never exceed the boiling point of water at atmospheric pressure, as the non-hermetic lid does not allow pressure to build up. The contents are enclosed by the crock and the lid, and attain an essentially constant temperature. Little vapor is produced due to the low temperature, and condensed vapor tends to form around the lid, keeping evaporation very low. Vapor may condense on the lid and fall back on the contents, keeping them moist if above the liquid level. A slow cooker is a countertop electrical home appliance that is used to cook stews and other dishes containing water at relatively low temperatures, with correspondingly long cooking times (several hours). Many recipes simply call for the ingredients to be put in the crock, with little preparation. The slow cooker can then safely be left to run unattended, making it a convenient cooking method.

When I come in on a morning I'd chuck some meat and frozen stew veg in peel a couple of spuds and a stock cube put water in switch on and that's it, waking up to a fantastic smell and a delicious meal! I can't understand why people turn their nose up at slow cookers or why they've such a very underserved reputation. Personally, I can't live without mine, If I'd got to lose any item in my kitchen believe me it certainly wouldn't be my slow cooker! It is so economical to use and you can buy cheaper cooks of meat which are ideal for slow cooking! A stew cooked in the slow cooker is divine! I was working nights and my slow cooker has been my best friend! Theres nothing better than coming home to a hot cooked meal after a hard days work, and I'd like to share with all you busy people how it can be done. We are now living in a demanding world where we are all working harder, but want to relax and play hard too. Slow cooking means that you don't have to start preparing a meal when you get in, and you don't have to resort to a microwave meal when you really just can't be bothered to cook. What about waking up to a bowl of steaming hot porridge, or a slice of warm banana bread! Yes bread can be made in your slow cooker too! There are a large variety of slow cookers available on the market ...  Read the complete review

Slow cooking I absolutely love my slow cooker, I bought it from Asda for about 5 years ago for £12.00 and it really was the best £12.00 I ever spent. It's only been in the last couple of years that I've really learnt how to use it properly. My slow cooker has 3 settings, low, medium and high and it's large enough to hold a medium joint of meat or a whole chicken. There is only me and my partner in our household so there is always plenty of leftovers for the freezer. I'm finding in these challenging economic times that my slow cooker is an invaluable piece of kitchen equipment. Firstly because it means I don't have to use the oven as ...  Read the complete review

I've been a fan of slow cooking since my teenage years, when my beloved Gran introduced me to the wonders of pot roast. While I've never actually gradated onto using a 'proper' slow cooker, perhaps my dooyoo points can be put to good use at some point in the future? Slow cooking is ideal as it allows proteins and other bits in cheap cuts of meat to break down over a long period of time, releasing goodness and softening up the meat markedly. In addition to this, the broken down fat etc. will add a wonderful flavour to any vegetables cooked with the meat. Sausages and prepared meats can be thrown in too, although they sometimes get a bit ...  Read the complete review

I got my first slow cooker as a newlywed - just a small capacity one, and to be honest it didn't get used much. But now, with three hungry teenagers, and two adults who both work full time (and then some!), my mega slow cooker is one of my "must have" pieces of kitchen equipment. First thing in the morning, I can bung in some cheap cuts of cheap lamb or beef, preferably browned in the frying pan to seal them first, but not absolutely necessary, plus a tin of chopped tomatoes, and whatever veg I can find lurking in the fridge - onions, carrots, parsnips, mushrooms - you name it, it can be used! Throw in some herbs and seasoning and a ...  Read the complete review
