Southampton have not got any really good players and I think they will struggle this season. Below is my opinion of their best 11: Goalkeeper – Paul Jones Paul Jones is a decent goalkeeper, but I think Southampton should buy a new one as Jones is now in his 30’s and so he doesn’t have many seasons left. He is a good keeper, but he does tend to concede quite a few goals. Right Back – Claus Lundekvam Claus Lundekvam may be a defender, but that shouldn’t have stopped him from not scoring in about 200 games for the club. He is a good player and a good tackler, but I think if he could score some goals, it would raise his game and make him a better player. Centre Back – Chris Marsden Marsden is a good defender and one who can work well with Richards. He is a good tackler but he is a player who could find himself sitting on the bench soon, unless he can perform better in matches.. Centre Back – Dean Richards Dean Richards is probably Southampton’s best player. He is a good defender and even though there was a lot of speculation that he might be leaving for Tottenham after they put in a bid for him, he still continued to play well for Southampton. He is still their player and one that Southampton need, to give them a chance of surviving this year. Left Back – Wayne Bridge Wayne Bridge is a player that played in every single one of Southampton 38 premiership games last season. He is a young defender and is fairly talented. He is still improving and has played for the England U21 side. Right Midfielder – Matthew Oakley Matthew Oakley is a decent young player who is still improving. He is a good passer and quite fast, which makes him fairly useful on the wing. Centre Midfielder – Anders Svensson I don’t know much about this player, but he looks like a player who Southampton will nee
d to help keep them in the premiership. He is quite skilful and a good passer. Centre Midfielder – Rory Delap Rory Delap signed for Southampton in the summer in a 4 million pound deal from Derby. H is a decent player and one that can help Southampton, as long as he plays his best. I think he will score about 8 goals this season for his new club. Left Midfielder – Kevin Davies Kevin Davies may be a striker, but I think he could play well for the club in this position. He is quite fast and a good shooter and passer, which midfielders need to be good. I think he will score about5-10 goals this season. Striker – Marian Pahars Marian Pahars is a great little player and he will need to be at his best the majority of the season so that Southampton have a better chance of survival. He is skilful and a good finisher and so Southampton will want him to score quite often this season. Striker – James Beatie James Beatie is a really good striker and a player that Southampton need to play in order for them to score quite a few goals. Beatie is a good goal scorer and I think he makes a great partner for Pahars.

As a football fan I was so happy with Saints doing so well. Normally, they avoid relegation and this year they are in the top half of the Premiership. Until the Ipswich they hadn’t conceded a goal for eight matches and would have equalled Arsenal’s record of clean sheets. But, it wasn’t to be. I just hope that the Saints don’t fall into free fall. They have good players who work hard for each other and will do well for Southampton football club. They have a new stadium on the way and hopefully a new manager next season. The likes of Dean Richards, Pahars, Tessem and Beatie are excellent players who will produce the good for the Saints. However, the only gripe I had with Southampton was their treatment of Dave Jones. It was testing times for Dave Jones with child abuse allegations, which were cleared. The last thing he needed was to be replaced. It was asif the board thought he was guilty. I know many Saints fans say his record was abysmal but it was with Dave Jones’s players that Glen Hoddle did the business. I feel sorry for Southampton because they will never be able to attract a top name manager and keep him there. The likes of Souness, and Hoddle will be lured away by bigger clubs. Maybe they should appoint from inside and stick with Gray and co. If the Chairman is complaining about lack of loyalty then I suggest he has a good hard luck at himself, it’s funny what goes around comes around. He stabbed Dave Jones in the back and then Hoddle stabbed him, he and Goram just up and left. A sour taste……… A good team that hopefully will continue to improve and do well next season. It would be nice to se Matt Le Tissier back under the new management, now there’s one player who’s loyalty you couldn’t dispute.

Southampton have been doing really well this season and a lot of that success has to be down to their goalkeeper Paul Jones who has been superb this season. Paul Jones has come back from a serious injury which nearly made him retire. However he has come back better then ever and is an important player for club and country. He has all the attributes which make him a good goalkeeper. He is agile and produces world class saves on regular occasions. He is also tall which allows him to command his area. He is a good communicater and keeps his defence organised. Also his kicking is good and can always be relied upon to keep things safe. Paul Jones took over from Neville Southall in goals for Wales and he has done a wonderful job. In Wales it was thought that no one could possibly replace Big Neville but Paul Jones has done the impossible. I watched Wales in midweek against Ukraine and he had a superb game and pull off some good saves. I wouldn't be surprised if one of the bigger Premier League teams come in for Paul soon as he is having a wonderful season and would do a good job elsewhere.

Gifted, talented, magic, i always rated Matthew Le Tissier as an outstanding player. He has the ability to split a defence open in a matter of seconds and had a trademark of scoring great goals. Pundits were singing the praises of Matt starting in the 1994/95 season and from then on he was continually being linked with a big money move away from the Dell. But eventually Matt decided to ignore the big lights and the chance to shine in Europe, and he stayed loyal to the Saints. I will always admire Matt for staying with them, through the ups and downs. He didn't really get the chance to prove himself on the International scene with only a small handful of games to his name, but what i am really wondering is: What has happened to him, he has just vanished. I have one memory of Matt Le Tissier that stands out in my mind and will always pop up when i hear his name. It is that wonder goal he scored against Blackburn Rovers. I think it was during 1995 and it was one of the best goals in history. He picked up the ball on the half way line and weaved in and out of three defenders before unleashing a 35 yard bullet which dipped over Tim Flowers' head. It was a truly magic goal which basicall tells me what Matt is all about and i really hope to see him back playing again in the near future. He also now has one of the best managers who will definitely bring out the best in him, Glenn Hoddle. I would just like to say well done Matt and good uck for the future, you have certainly earned my respect.

One player who will sparkle for Saints this season with be left back (or left wing back, knowing Hoddle) Wayne Bridge. This lad is packed with talent and is growing in confidence all the time - witness his screamer of a free kick to score against the Dons last season. The team still desperately needs strengthening but I trust Hoddle to know where, and to strike with his limited budget when the time is right. His coaching skill should keep us up in the meantime. But when we're in the "New Dell" next season, watch out! If you stop and think that Saints have been surviving in the Premiership on gate receipts that are less than what most clubs make on program sales on a match day, their achievement in recent years is truly remarkable.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

At the start of the 2000/2001 season Paul Jones was replaced in goal by Neil Moss after a shaky start. However, he regained his place and was an ever present for the remainder of the season. Jones, ex-farmer and current Welsh International first choice goalie, was the first choice for all of the previous season until he was injured playing for his country. Moss came in and acquitted himself extremely well, so much so that many fans were surprised when 'Jonah' came back in for the first game this season. No-one questions Jones' ability at shot-stopping: in this he is amongst the best in the Premiership. He is also an exceptional penalty-saver. His downfall is in his problems with crosses, whether from corners or open play; he tends to come for the ball, flap wildly, and then as often as not rely on his defenders to clear up afterwards. Rumours abounded, probably not totally unfounded, that the players have little confidence in Jones because of this - and certainly the fans were having nervous breakdowns every time the ball is crossed into the penalty area. His distribution also left much to be desired, and a reliance on left-footed kicking (unconvincing in itself) has led to one or two defensive disasters. Neil Moss's main problem, on the other hand, is hardly his own fault: he is one of the most vertically challenged 'keepers in the top flight. That said, he seems to be much more convincing dealing with crosses and long balls, and his speed of the line is wonderful. Whilst not anything like so good at saving shots, his judgment tends to reduce the number he needs to make anyway. His communication with defenders is also excellent. After an excellent end to last season, 'Jonah' is undoubtedly the first choice; however Moss can only improve with experience and is a more than capable backup.
