Now at Boro, Southgate has linked up with his former teammate at Aston Villa, Ugo Ehiogu which leads to Boro having a stronger back line because these two already have an understanding, which may have taken months to develop with other players. In the matches I have seen these two playing together, this relationship works well as Southgate always knows where Ehiogu is and ... more

After being on the transfer list for over a year at his own request with Aston Villa, Southgate finally left in the summer of 2001 to join Boro which surprised some as the player wants to play European football. However, that does give Boro fans some optimism as Southgate feels that the Boro will be in Europe in the not too distant future. Now at Boro, Southgate has linked up with his former teammate at Aston Villa, Ugo Ehiogu which leads to Boro having a stronger back line because these two already have an understanding, which may have taken months to develop with other players. Premium Review Why hasn't he moved to a bigger club? (193 words)

In my mind Gareth Southgate is probably one of the best central defenders Europe and certainly Engalnd at the moment. He has problems at his club Aston Vill a and has been on the transfer list for a while now. There have been a few enquiries so far but no certain bids as yet. It is confusing that more clubs are not after him and that his current club don't do something to keep him. Gareth is one of the calmest defenders in the Premier League. He has pace so often he is doing last ditch tackles to save the day. One of Gareths weaknesses is that he doesn't score enough goals. Last season he went through a phase where he scored quite a few. ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Gareth Southgate: He's good but it's not his era (228 words)

Southgate is one of my favourite players, even if he did miss THAT penalty. It’s a shame he wants to leave the Villa but you can understand the lads ambition and his wanting to play with a quality set of players (no offence villa). However is he doesn’t move soon he will have little chance of getting a club game and an England game. He’s a level headed player with some quality positional play. He great in the air and can time his tackles perfectly, he quite comfortable on the ball and commands a back line, although he’s a little slow. Having said this he has never made a real impression on the England squad, and unfortunately I ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Southgate - Should He Be Dropped? (179 words)

Southgate should forget all this stuff with Chelsea.. It's becoming apparent that they don't want him desperatly now. Like J.Gregory has blasted out that if they wanted him then they should've had him by now. When Southgate requested for a transfer (whether or not he was expecting to join Chelsea) he no longer wanted to play for Villa.. Right now his heart isn't at Villa Park anymore and when you heart isn't into it, it's hard to psyche yourself up for a game. Will his heart ever be back with Villa?? Maybe he was expecting a queue of clubs wanting him.. that never happened.. got too big for his boots? I ...  Read the complete review

Gareth Southgate: You have no future with england (146 words)

If, England play a three at the back, then I can see Gareth Southgate, getting a game. But, if they play a four in defence, I cannot see how he will be picked against the likes of Keown, Adams, Campbell, Ferdinand. And a word of advise to Southgate, it's not because you play for Villa, it's because your simply not good enough. Missing the penalty against Germany, will be his international high and low. His high being playing in a semi-final of Euro 96, and his low will be missing a penalty. They say to be a good player you have to perform for your club, if Southgate, doesn't start performing for Aston Villa, he could find himself out of the England reckoning ...  Read the complete review
