Advantages: None
Disadvantages: can be inaccurate, causes traffic
I really hate speed cameras! They are popping up all over my area, and have increased substantially over the past couple of years.
I honestly think that they cause more traffic. On our highways, we have signs that say "photo enforcement zone 1/2 mile". As soon as everyone sees these signs, they begin to do the speed limit. Right after the photo zone, they go back to going over the speed limit. This cause of dropping speed causes gridlock. If we all just kept going at the same speed without slowing down, traffic would flow a little more smoothly.
I have also noticed these cameras popping up on smaller roads with really slow speed limits. I was driving past a university in my area recently, and noticed the cameras. These are in place mainly because of the many students walking around in the area. Why do we need speed traps for that though? Pedistrians have signs and crosswalks to prevent them from getting hit by cars, so why do they need to make sure we go slow?
I think speed traps are a violation of our privacy and rights. If there is not a police officer to see us speeding, then that is their loss.
Summary: Speed traps

- 09/03/09 I know you say that speed cameras are an invasion of privacy and rights but I think certain intrusions into our lives are necessary for the point of saving lives and policemen just can physically be there all the time.
However, what I do HATE is unclear speed limits. My dad was driving down a dual carriageway and there were road works - albeit they weren't working on the roads at that time and the roads were quiet. He drove along at normal speed and was flashed. Got a point or two (I don't exactly know how many) taken off his license because the speed warning sign was lying face down on the ground. Stupid really! And we couldn't prove it. |
