Advantages: good for old doris in her robin reliant

Disadvantages: lose your license, takes an age to get anywhere

I cant take much more of it!!

Motorways were built back in the 60's (or inother words a very long time ago!) and cars have been evolving ever since.

Take the average 1960s car and compare it to the average car of the millenium and you'll notice a hell of a difference:

Brakes- back then, brakes were poor, relied on drums and were nowhere near as good as they are today. Modern cars feature ABS, dics brakes front and rear and suspension which works in harmaony with the braking system to make the performance better.

Engine Power- Electronic fuel injection, 16valve engines, Dual overhead cams, all sorts of new technology which outdates that 40 years ago. Now cars are capable of much higher speeds without causing damage to te engine.

Suspension and Steering - Power Steering, wishbone suspension - you name it, its been tweeked, and tweeked, and tweeked. Cars stick to corners like they never used to!

Other safety improvements - Seat belts, airbags (front, side and even roof), safety glass, roll cages, side impact protection, head restraints.....need I go on?

what im getting to here, is that although all this has changed, the speed limits havent. Petrol has changed with inflation, car prices have risen, safety levels have risen but the motorway speed limit hasnt!

How many of you honestly stick to 70 MPH on the motorway? I dont, but at the same time, I never go over 90 because of the law. Get caught and its 3 points and a fine. That, we could all do without.

Now they are introducing cameras everywhere, and before you know it, they'll be on all the motorways.

I think they should leave us drivers alone and stop tormenting us. Raise the speed limit on motorways, ditch the cameras except for blackspots!!

Cars on the road in the 1960's were frequently real 'death-traps', and the M1 in 1965 when I first drove on it was a nightmare (with no speed limit).

Sorry I do not think you have made a case for the limit to be increased. Speed kills, and not necessarily just yourself.

If you want to explore the performance of your car fully, try a 'track day'. Then you can 'confine' the risk.

I think given the choice between a crash at 70, hitting a steering wheel, and a crash at 70, hitting an airbag, the chances of survival are higher in one case. I'll let you decide.

Cars are only as safe as the drivers in them, and there's a lot of idiots out there.
I don't think safety glass or an airbag are going to help you much at 70, let alone 90mph.
