Advantages: Speed kills
Disadvantages: really - speed DOES kill
Speed limits eh?? love 'em or loathe them, we have got 'em. Speed kills - maybe it's a cliche, but it's true. Let's do a comparison with Germany. Very low speed limits in town, very high speeds on the motorbahn. Result?? Compared to Britain ( comparatively high limits in town , low on the motorway), Germany looses more citizens per km than the UK on it's motorways. In towns, the trend is reversed. Indisputable fact. * Now lets looks at what that simple phrase "losing more citizens" means. 10 people a day die on UK roads. That is 10 people every day of the year. 3596 dead people in 1996. Of course, not ALL of those were due to speed. For instance, the same year 580 died due to drink driving. ** No emotional guff here about familes etc., if you can't work out what 3596 dead people means you shouldn't be here. Drink driving is reprehensible and undefendable. I think most people would agree with that. Why is speed any different? I have been know to speed - especially when I was younger. It never killed me, and I never killed anyone, so therefor speeding must be safe. I guess. Of course there ARE 20 million*** dead people who cant say that. But they're dead so I guess their opinion wouldnt count . The speed limits are a law. There are laws about murder, theft, water disposal house building, and drink driving. If we break those laws and get caught we expect to be punished. Why is speeding different? It won't kill you......at least - it didnt kill you last time. Speed - get caught - pay up - and look big about it. You knew it was the law before you stepped into the car - it's not like speed limits were introduced while you weren't looking. Don't complain that it was a camera that was hidden - the speed limit was there before the camera. You wouldn't expect the police to release a burglar because they weren't there
when he committed his crime..........or would you? We are all SO concerned about law and order, why should this law be any different from all the rest? Just think..if you slow down the life you save might even be your own. * http://www.bast.de/htdocs/fachthemen/irtad/english /we2.html **http://www.transtat.dtlr.gov.uk/tables/1998/ ragb/ddart97.htm ***http://news6.thdo.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/spec ial_report/1998/car_crash/newsid _47000/47357.stm BTW - theres no choice for 'not any more' in the "Do you ever drive above the speed limit?" section...........

- 27/04/02 The stress by government advertisements on speeding does seem to be making it less socially acceptable. In built up areas at least. |

- 26/04/02 some horrific figures here. i wonder if people who tend to be careless on the roads will get wiser and understand the real problem of high speed
