Advantages: stop speed

Disadvantages: where does money go?

Speed kills there isn't any doubt about that, so surely speed cameras are a good idea?

In Leicestershire there were until recently just 6 speed cameras. The police stated that these had made no significant difference to fatalities so planned to install more. Since they admitted that the current cameras have made litle difference more cynical people will ask whether these plans have more than just safety at heart. If all police forces are able to keep the cash from cameras to reinvest then we are likely to see an increase in the number of cameras. The problem I have with this is that it seems to be putting cash above the price of life.

Speed cameras are in my opinion infinitely more prefferable to other traffic calming measures such as speed bumps. Unfortunately as I go through areas with cameras I often find myself concentrating more on the speedometer than on the road.

Levels of error allowed by the cameras are also of concern to me. Is the limit in a 30mph zone really 30 or are you allowed a 10% error. I suppose if the police came out & said what error was allowed then everyone would start driving to that instead.

With society becoming increasingly used to seeing violent images the TV ads to stop speed have lost their effect so I believe the best way to stop drivers speeding will be to hit them where it hurts - the pocket. The one proviso I would have is that the cash raised went to relevant causes such as public transport & maintaing roads rather than being used to raise money for other issues.
