Advantages: Less Accidents, More Time for Police to do Otherthings

Disadvantages: Possibility that when there are accidents they will be more serious

After returning from a family holiday to Germany the question i raise here is why do we need speed limits on Motorways. The German's have no limits on there motorways and as a result experience a lot less traffic accidents. In the 2 weeks of travelling German Autobarns we did not see any accidents at all.

Then within about 20 minutes of being back in England we came across our first accident on the M20 then after an hour there we find out the M25 is shut near the M40 junction because of another accident.

So a Journey from Dover to High Wycombe took almost 8 hours when at most it normally takes about 2 and a half.

So why dont we take a leave out of the Germans book and abolish Motorway speed limits. It would cause less accidents and may also allow the police to solve some real crimes instead of sitting on Motorways all day.

I think the reasoning is unsound in this op for several reasons.
The poor standard of driving in this country. I am talking about rubberneckers, go slow people hogging the central and , sometimes, outside lanes, poor vision (not looking before they leap), poor judgement (thinking they have more room when they don,t) and the list is never ending.
The there is the roadworks, self explaining. Then the state of the roads (not actually as bad as people make out in some areas, burt terrible in others.
I agree inj principal with taking bobbies off of this type of work and getting them back where they are needed most in the cities and towns nicking the joyriders, burglars vandals and theives (amongst many others that are ruining our once great country) but first they would have to reducate an awful lot of drivers or stick speed cameras everywhere, penalising fast drivers rather than the really dangerous ones that are out there.

sorry, im with everyone else here.
To many cars on our roads for unlimited speeds.
Our roads are not as good quality, to many users, to many road works. Also, although "some" of the autobahns in Germany have no limit, or advisory limit, they DO have strict distance rules, and following to close is what they get you on instead. here people follow to close, can you imagine everyone on the M1 doing 100mph+ following as close as they do? its bad enough as it is.
Sorry, i cant agree with any part of your op.
However, i do think the limit on the motorways should be increased, as 70mph is just to slow, think 80, or even maybe 90 with todays cars, is more reasonable, but a limit is needed, othewise those company car, BMWs and vectras will be tearing down on you at 120mph and wouldnt have a clue what to do if something went wrong!!
will happy to re-rate if you research more and give valid arguments

Hi, welcome & ditto! I cannot see how aboloshing the speed limit would cause less accidents, but if you could explain to us why you think it would your op would be of more value (ie worth a higher rating)

And it's worth noting that just because you didn't see any accidents it doesn't mean that they haven't happened! Fishbulb >><>?™
