Advantages: less motorists complaining, easier for cyclists
Disadvantages: none that I can see
I have recently been reading about cycle paths around the country that go round lamp-posts, finish suddenly or are a few foot long. Who designs these things, who pays for these things. Personally I think that every bike in the country should have some kind of charge levied on them, not a huge amount (ie a one-off payment of £5) payable when a bike is purchased this would then appease the motorist who generally feel that they are footing the bill for these lanes and also the money raised could go towards better planning and better cycle routes. surely there not hard to plan, follow the line of the road stop where it stops, start where it starts and keep the lanes to the road not on the pathways.

- 19/02/01 So cyclists don't pay council tax or drive cars occasionlly too then....
As to who designs these things I used to work with someone who was on a local council & had been involved, you'll be pleased to know I spent a lunchtime taking him apart on the issue because the answer to your question is that they are generally designed by old farts on the council who just don't have a clue & haven't ridden a bike in 20 years.....
This said it's no wonder they're crap! |

- 28/09/00 The only reason they create cycle paths is to avoid taxi drivers ( ha ha ) |
