Advantages: Calm and a good passer

Disadvantages: Gets injuries alot

Many eyebrows were raised when Manchester United broke the defender record for Jaap Stam a few years ago. He had a bad European Championship and lots of the press were saying that it was a waste of money even before he signed for United.

Stam did not get off to a good start with United but it takes some players a while to get used to the pace of the Premiership. Jaap Stam has all the qualities of a good defender. He has good heading ability and he has the unusual attribute of being able to pass the ball. Jaap never panicks and seems to calm down players around him. Jaap could play in midfield if united were desperate as he has some skill.

In my mind Jaap Stam was a bargain even at the price united paid. They have missed him recently and I am sure he will be back in the side straightaway when he comes back from injury.
