Jaap Stam, the Dutch star, is the most solid defender i have ever seen in the Premiership.
He has attributes that any defender would dream to have. He has pace, height, heading, passing, presence, tackling and even shooting! He takes the freekicks for Holland. As i have said he plays for Holland and Man United. He ahas risen to great stature over the past few years. He started out at, Cambur Leeuwarden, Willem II and then moved on to PSV Eindhoven from where he was to be bought by Sir Alex Fergusson for a world record fee for a defender of £10,500,000. St Eindhoven he was recognised as Dutch player of the year. With heinz sight it was a bargain!
He was born Jakob Stam on the 17/7/72 in Kampen in Holland. He was bought by United in 1998 and his debut was the Charity Shield against Arsenal. He scored his first United goal against Leicesterat Filbert Street on 16/1/99 and to this day that is his only game in 101 first team appearances. Adjectiveslike dependable, reliable and colossal are regularly used to describe Stam in his defensive role along side Johnsen, G Neville and Irwin. They play in front of Barthez who together keep the best, most consistent defence in the Premiership.
An awesome player and hopefully he will play many more times for United.
