Disadvantages: He needs a partner to play with

Jaap Stam is my favourite defender in the Premier League, and he is also probably the best, although coming from a Norwich Fan this doesn’t mean much. For me he is everything you would want in a defender. He’s supremely physical so he’s not going to get into any trouble in the English Game. He has an excellent heading ability, to get rid of those balls over the top and he’s got a grand turn of pace to catch players.

However when I looked at last seasons table I was amazed to see the number of Goals Man Utd conceded. I know you had goalkeeper problems but you conceded similar amounts as Everton and Tottenham. However I put this down to the lack of a quality partner to Stam, whereas Stam has everything Silverste is seriously lacking and they never really worked. In Ronnie Wallwork you have a gem and when Wes Brown is back he’ll be good, but they aren’t ready yet and won’t be for a few seasons. The best partner you have at the moment is Ronny Johnson and still he’s not quite it. I don’t like to encourage clubs to spend huge amounts but Alex Ferguson should seriously look at investing in a proven defender, an Italian or maybe even Southgate.

However this was an opinion on Stam. He has everything and a great footballing brain. He blends aggression with intelligence and he’s done and will do Man Utd proud. If only we had someone a tenth as good at Norwich.

Heard a possible variation of the old Yip Jaap Stam chant recently: 'Yip Jaap Stam looks hard to me - he gets stitched up on live TV'
