Advantages: money

Disadvantages: potentially poor grades

I dont see that working during your degree offers you the best chance of doing your best when it comes to marks. I realise that the financial pressures are great - I should know - Im on the 4th year of my degree after all! But, I do wonder if a study has been done to show the correlation between marks and amount of time worked. Cramming a social life into your schedule is hard enough, without working as well.

I think the rewards of working hard and getting a good job from good grades is more important that some beer money for a friday night, frankly.

I understand that people have to work to make ends meet, but Im convinced that their work would suffer in general. May I point out that not every single person who works is basically going to fail - just that it is an extra worry when youre going thru the most important 3 or 4 years of your life. The money we get from the government is pretty appalling, and barely covers rents and living costs, but it is a case of doing the sums.

Perhaps stopping work during busy times such as deadlines, and exams would be most suitable, but finding an employer who would allow this might be hard.

Oh and student employers generally dont exactly have your best interests at heart.

The best solution (where possible) is to try to get vacation employment with a company in your line of work. That way you get some valuable experience (looks good on a CV too) and some cash to get you through the academic year. It certainly helps when you graduate too, because relevant experience is always desirable.

Exactly, be sensible is all I ask.

I agree with what you are saying but unfortunately not everyone has the opportunity not to work. I worked through 2 and a half years of my degree so as I could give up my job for my final semester. I would really recommend this as I came out with a first!
