Advantages: extra money comes in handy, good experiance

Disadvantages: Can cut into time for study/socialising

Unfortunately for a lot of students now it isn't really a case of whether they will be distracted from study by a job it's a case of whether they would be able to stay at university without a job.

I managed to just about stay afloat through my first year without working in term times. This was due more to the fact that I took a year out and saved a bit rather than my general money saving skills. This year I have a job working as an IT assistant in the university library. One of the best places to look for a job is with your university; many offer work either in the student union bar, the library or the bookshop. Working for the university normally means a reasonable wage and also makes sure that you don’t get exploited and signed up for too many shifts.

From what I’ve been told prospective employers are impressed by any work skills that you have gained regardless of whether they have come from stacking shelves. What people are looking for is a commitment to the job more than anything. No one expects you to do brain surgery while at university.

For me the extra money certainly comes in handy, in fact it pays for my Internet connection in my room and means that I don’t feel quite so guilty if I buy a CD or a new top every now and then.
Just be careful that you leave enough time for yourself to live as well as study. University life is a balance, you cant jut study and/or work….leave some time for play too!
