Advantages: Extra cash
Disadvantages: Takes away from study
I've almost finished my second year at university now and I've worked as a catering assistant in a busy uni hall of residence for most of this year. I didn't work in my first year mostly because I didn't need to and I was more concerned with study.....well things change. My dad lost his job at the end of the summer and feeling guilty for being at uni so far away., I decided work to help pay for food and alcohol and make life easier on my parents. I chose a job in a hall because its not too badly paid £4.22 an hour and you get holiday pay after a few months. The work isn't exactly taxing either, serve some food, dry dishes and mop floors...no big deal. I could choose to work as much or as little as I wanted. Currently I work Monday and Wednesday 6-8pm and Sunday 12.15-2. There are always extra shifts available when you need the cash to but there is a down side. I live about a mile from work so I have to leave at least half an hour before work starts and by 8 o'clock there are no buses home, so it eat into my time quite a bit. Plus by the time I get home from work, I'm shattered I just want to eat dinner and go to bed. I rarely have the energy to start working when I get home, which I know has taken away from my studies this year. I enjoy work because the people are nice, I'm used to it and the extra dosh always comes in handy. But it really gets in the way when I've got work to do and don't have the time to spare. If you need the cash, I would definitely recommend a university hall for easy money. There is a fun atmosphere and its a great place to meet people and make friends...you can also get some free food every now and then. I think I will probably keep my job next year as the money is useful and I can organsie it around my studies. However it can eat into study time and leave you tired and unenthusiastic which is a
definite disadvantage. Dull as it sounds its a lot better to work at the weekends so your week days are free to concentrate on studying.... Luckily for me I work in St Salvators Hall in St Andrews, which is reputedly where Prince Will is staying next year...so serving royalty has got to be an incentive to keep any job. My advice.....study should always come first, after all you are at uni to get a degree and its not worth blowing it for a few extra quid a week. I should probably take my own advice....
