Summer Riots 2001Newest Review: ... until a few years ago that she was in any way different to me. I never looked at her and saw someone darker than me, I saw my best friend. Why are children not like this anymore? I have no words to describe the confusion that I feel when I hear/see racism. People are people (as Depeche Mode once said). All my friends of the same age (25) have no concept of racism, were flabbergasted by the ... more |

I grew up in a white area, went to a senior school were there can't have been more than 5 people there who were not white. My junior school consisted of one non white person and she was my best friend. I still miss her, she moved away when I was 10. I felt lucky that she was my friend. She was Sri Lankan, although to the best of my memory was born in England. Her dad was a doctor, her mum a very good cook (I can vouch for that)- we watched Hailys comet through her telescope, spied on the neighbours had hours of fun with Star Wars toys.. And I can honestly say that it never occurred to me until a few years ago that she was in any way ... Read the complete review

I have lived in Oldham till I was sixteen and have lived in Mosside and now live in Hounslow which has a very good cultral mix of people. So I feel that I can have a say about the troubles that Oldham now is locked into, I was in the Mosside riots when it kicked off but those riots where more about poverty white and blacks with no opportunity for a decent job because of where you came from and the harresment from the police we all went on a rampage then but the police knew then that the only poeple to lose out would be ourselves so long as they kept us all locked into destroying our own area and kept us out of the city centre of manchester. Oldham on the other ... Read the complete review

Racism is a problem which has come into the pblic eye during the 90's. This is mainly due to the Media blowing events and stories out of all proportion(usually the tabloids such as The Sun). THe current events in Oldham have many causes, however, unlike what the Media wishes to portray it, it has not been instigated by whites. However I do not wish to delve into the situation in Oldham in great detail, I would rather look at Racism as a problem in general. Racism not only occurs by an indiginous population to a migratory race. Indeed this sort of racism does occur and can be condemned, However the immigrant races are just as to blame as the ... The summer of riots indeed. Be it poverty, be it racism, be it middle class youth in Europe standing up for these groups which they don’t at home.A very confusing scene around isn’t it. One thing that is consistent with the rucks is the Police are the target and not their issues and hang-ups. Of course we are in summer two with no Olympics or World Cup so theres a big chunk of nothing to occupy the unemployed. What better than a good fight and the chance to flip over a car or two, maybe torch your local community, or someone’s you don’t like. I think the Northern riots that are trying desperately to seep into the south are all about ... Read the complete review

Giving a section title of “Summer Riots” is offensive in my eyes! It is too light hearted and therefore you can take my title as condemnation of this fact! Firstly, “summer riots 2001” reminds me of either a festival or the Grease song "Summer Nights" but maybe that’s just me. This section title implies that it doesn’t necessarily have to be taken serious by our “whole” society but just by those involved. After all it was just because of the summer and people got a little too over heated! Well my friends, we have a big problem in our society, one that needs to be fixed and fixed PDQ. ...
