Racism is a problem which has come into the pblic eye during the 90's. This is mainly due to the Media blowing events and stories out of all proportion(usually the tabloids such as The Sun).

THe current events in Oldham have many causes, however, unlike what the Media wishes to portray it, it has not been instigated by whites. However I do not wish to delve into the situation in Oldham in great detail, I would rather look at Racism as a problem in general.

Racism not only occurs by an indiginous population to a migratory race. Indeed this sort of racism does occur and can be condemned, However the immigrant races are just as to blame as the indiginous population.

When they in their new country they bring with them their own beliefs, customs and religions. These immediately sets them apart from the indiginous population. They usually move into area where their own creed hae moved to before, a good example of this is Birmingham for Pakistani immigrants. This sets them appart from the indiginous population in the area, who will feel resentment at these "foreigners" for taking their jobs and communitys over.

These feelings are not helped by the goverments increasingly prominority legislation. These are ment to combat racism, whereas in actual practice they reinforce age old predjudices. Pro minority legislation cannot destroy racism. It embitters the majority as they see that small immigrant minoritys have more rights than they themselves.

Now don't get me wrong, I am not saying the goverment should turn a blind eye to Racism and try to sweep it under the carpet, but the current policies merely inflame hatred rather than quench it. I do not pretend to have all the anwsers, but I do know that the current laws will only suit to fan the flame of predjudice, creating scenes like Oldham recently into a much more regular occurrence.

the recent troble was most definetely instigatd by whites. however, it has little to do with race. people just seem to enjoy a ruck every now and again, and race is used as the excuse.

people bringing new cultures and traditons is a postive factor than enhanaces our society. the problem is those who are ignorant and intolerant of people who are different

Great first op! - v. interesting viewpoint.

Sorry to be pernickity, but racism came into the public eye/media way before the 90's, just in different contexts.

Agree with you about the complexity of the problem of racial violence and segregation.
Nice one!
