Sunderland A.F.C. ... football club, based at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, in North-East England. They are currently nicknamed the 'Black Cats', after being previously known as 'The Rokerites'. They moved to the Stadium of Light in 1997 after 99 years at Roker Park. Sunderland's traditional local rivals are Newcastle United. Before the Second World War, Sunderland were league champions six times- in 1892, 1893, 1895, 1902, 1913, and most recently in 1936, when they became the last football club wearing striped shirts to win the English football league. They were elected into the football league in 1890, becoming the first team to join the league after its birth in 1888; and stayed in the top flight of English football until 1958, a record of consecutive seasons which only Arsenal have bettered in 1992. The club won their first F.A. Cup in 1937 with a 3-1 victory over Preston North End.

The only thing holding the club back at the moment is money because they have sorted the managerial position with the appointment of Bruce, a tried and tested manager at this level and the stadium is a modern 50,000 seater so that won't need expansion. Does Niall Quinn have enough money to get the club where they want to be and if so is he ... more

... willing to hand it over? The answer to both questions is I think is no. If you look at the first team squad at Sunderland they don't really have any stars, merely a large squad of mediocre to good players, this isn't going to get you into Europe, the...more

After an almost disastrous end to the season Sunderland managed to avoid the dreaded drop and even poach Steve Bruce from Wigan Athletic, a team which finished 11th in the table; not bad really! I don't think the Wigan supporters will be delighted though, saying that they may end up with Roberto Martinez as their new manager and he has more than proved himself at the MK Dons since taking over from Paul Ince a little while ago. So, where do Sunderland go from here? The only thing holding the club back at the moment is money because they have sorted the managerial position with the appointment of Bruce, a tried and tested manager at this level and the stadium ...  Read the complete review

Hi Sunderland A.F.C. is my team they are dearest in my heart. I came to support them as my father is a born and bred mackem. nicknamed th black cats, they are a hugely passionatly supported side. playing at the prestigeous sunderland stadium of light, with a capacity of nearly 49000 it is one of the most atmpspheric grounds in europe. with the club slipping down into the championship a couple of years ago, and nearly to league 1 chairman niall quinn stepped in with his consortium and pumped his cash into the club, bringing roy keane in to look after the managerial side of the club, although i class us as a massive club our last real honour was in 1973 when we beat leeds ...  Read the complete review

There’s nothing more fickle than a football fan. I should know, I’ll admit to calling for a change in management at the first sign of a blip! Sunderland and Norwich are two clubs that share an affinity that goes back to the 1985 league cup final that Norwich won 1-0. Since then the clubs have contested a friendly cup each season they meet each other. So as a club, I kind of like Sunderland but I’m not liking the reaction of some of their support at the moment. Two seasons ago the club were relegated from the Premiership with the unfortunate record of having the least points in the season, 19 to be precise. That season they’d spent big and went down ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Sunderland A.F.C.: Peter Reid:Action Man (429 words)
by - written on 14/09/02 (Very useful, 27 readings)

Stop press!!!!! Sunderland have bought not one but two players before the transfer deadline! I think Bob Murray must have mislaid his cashpoint card and Peter Reid has taken advantage spending £8 million on Tore Andre Flo and Marcus Stewart, with Stewart admittedly being a steal at £1 million. Flo is a proven goal scorer, and looks to be the strength that Sunderland need up front, and even more so now that Phillips is out with a hernia. For so long, the loyal Sunderland fans (of which I must stress I am not one. Black and white through and through) have stood by the club when chairman Bob Murray paid lip service to their desires for another striker to help out ...  Read the complete review
