Advantages: Envigorating on hot days, Cheap
Disadvantages: Bracing on cold days
A Lido is an outdoor swimming pool. The name is derived from an island reef separating the lagoon of Venice from the Adriatic Sea. The town of Lido, at the northern end of the island, is a fashionable resort. In the UK, between around about 1890 and the 1930s at large number of outdoor swimming pools were built, and approximately 50 of these are still in use today. The best source of information I know on these is at http://www.lidos.org.uk written by Oliver Merrington. This web site is extremely thorough, and is also kept up to date with details like the opening dates for the pools. On a hot summers day its wonderful to be able to sunbath and then cool off in the water. Most UK outdoor pools _are_ heated - its just they don't usually feel that way. However, the worst bit is always getting in. Once you have jumped in and are swimming about, then it really is much better. The advantage of an outdoor pool is that they are typically bigger than indoor pools, with fewer people in them so you usually get a lot more space to swim in. Outdoor pools are a great way of debouncing kids. Start a weekend with a couple of hours splashing in a pool, and you're guaranteed a peaceful evening once they crash out. My favourite outdoor pools are the ones at Jesus Green in Cambridge (its 100 yards long), Hinksey in South Oxford, Letchworth in Herts and Peterborough.
