To be honest, when I was younger I looked upon people who studied Martial Arts as somewhat akin to people who played 'Dungeons and Dragons' or didn't like football. The endless conversations about the latest Hong Kong movies, Bruce Lee moves from some of my wannabe ninja friends never failed to bore me senseless. However, wanting to get fit and having lived in Korea for over a year I finally decided to give Taekwondo a try. Six weeks of one hour lessons every weekday night and one belt colour change later I'm a true convert. Taekwondo: Arguably more practical than you think.... (230 words)

Taekwondo mainly focuses on agility, speed and coordination. This martial art is in sharp contrast to the heavy-footedness of sports such as kick-boxing or muai-tai. Many students of the sport enjoy its balance of traditional martial arts and atheleticism. Many critics cite is impracticality as a down side, admittedly the high roundhouses and spinnning kicks are suitable for bar room brawls _ however, all round fitness and improved coordination are enviable facets. Importantly, for me, Taekwondo provides a relaxed and professional atmosphere to train in and provides me with the opportunity to stay fit. The sport is focused on kicks, particularly to the ...  Read the complete review
