An actophile is a person who collects teddy’s A teddy bear I do not know of anyone who at sometime in his or her life has not owned and loved one. Teddy bears the teddy bear is so called because Theodore Roosevelt (nickname teddy) the 26th president of America was taken on a hunt in1902 and his hosts had caught a bear cub tied it to a tree as an easy target for him. Theodore refused to shoot it and walked away ordering the bear to be released. This event was made popular by a political cartoonist who drew the bear cute and with big endearing eyes. The Teddy bear remained Roosevelt mascot for his political career. In Brooklyn Mr Mitchcom and his wife created a toy teddy bear after they had seen a report of teddy Roosevelt and the bear. They opened a toy manufacturing business the ideal novelty and toy company. A few years before this in Germany a polio victim Margaret Stieff was making stuffed toys her nephew Richard Stieff helped design and produce stuffed toy bears produced his first toy bear. These toys became popular and the bears became known as Teddy bears. These are now collector’s items. A Teddy bear is to cuddle and hold a source of comfort to many a child. I am sure before the teddy bear was so recognised a child or baby would have a soft cloth to cuddle and comfort .It is a natural instinct to cuddle something soft. There are many, many teddy bears made now too many to research and name. We all have our favourite bear character’s Rupert, pooh, Paddington there are many .Who is your favourite? A teddy bear is given with love. It is a good gift to give to a child. Make sure when you buy your bear it has a safety recommendation modern bears are usually fine but make sure the eyes are safety eyes, and will not come off or break in baby’s mouth and moveable limbs do not have sharp edges. Teddy bears come in many fabric’s towelling, fur, vel
vet, mohair, and short or long pile fabrics. Teddy bears are filled with soft fillings or sometimes beans. A teddy bear often has a bell or a pad you can push to make a noise, some bears if you hug them growl. I have known children be distraught at the loss of a teddy bear I know a little girl who lost hers on a shopping trip. I did realised he was missing till after the shops shut. This mother had an agonising night, a distressed tearful child. The next day however bought joy; the panda bear was discovered sitting on the post office counter. The naughty panda never went shopping with us again. I have used Teddy bears in many of my work situations. Children who came into the care home had one either from home or one we gave to them so they had something of their own to cuddle and love. I use Teddy bears in role play at work teddy does not mind if he is baby, the naughty person or if he is ill and has to have injections. Most children usually have more than 1 teddy bear but have a favourite that gets cuddled most. Have you still got your childhood teddy bear ? A lot of people have. Teddy bears are often in children’s stories Teddy bears not only appeal to children but to adults too they are often given as a gift to a loved one many bears are designed with messages of love on them There are many, many teddy bears made by soft toy manufacturers. You could make your own teddy bear I have made them in the past . There are many sites for teddy bears some with patterns for making your own. One site is www.Teddybearsearch.com/patterns

- 09/11/03 I agree- teddy bears are great for kids and adults. When I was 18, I worked in a tiny village in Kenya. A women's organisation in London made hundreds of knitted teddy bears in little bags for us to take with us for the children. When we gave them out, the children just looked confused - they hadn't seen teddy bears before and had no idea what to do with them. The smiles on their faces when we showed them how to cuddle them will stay with me forever.
